I just finished up my 2nd semester at ISU down in Ames, IA and during the last couple weeks of school i took advantage of the non-existant fishing season. Can’t wait for the opener this weekend though.

I have a cabin up on Lake Lac Courte Oreilles near Hayward so i hit a lot of those surrounding lakes including the Chippewa Flowage. But if i want to stay closer to EC i fish Lake Holcombe quite often and that produces some pretty nice fish. I also travel further north to Winter, WI once a year and hit Moose, Barber, and a number of rivers. All of them are pretty good up there. I’m also a top-water guy. Favorite way to catch any fish especially musky. Now you got me all excited and i still have to wait a couple weeks for that opener. Still glad to see a fellow tooth hunter though.

Bass are fun, but you dont have to look very far in central Iowa to at least get some fish with teeth. I like bass fishing just as much as the next guy, but there is just something better about walleye fishing.

Not quite sure if they are within an hour of ames or not but, I know they are by des moines, 12 mile, 3 mile, and big creek all have musky and walleyes stocked in them. They are draining and killing off 12 mile this year cause of the yellow bass so after this year it will be a few before it is a good lake again, but the other 2 will still be good. Also out there is brushy creek. I am not quit sure where it is except for it is in the western part of the state by ames somewhere. I have never fished it, but I know brushy has walleyes in it. And you can always head up I 35 to clear lake for some good eye fishing also. Also many nice musky come out of Clear. You could also try Storm Lake for eyes. Hope this helps maybe somebody else who fished that way more than I do can chime in and give you some advice.

Brushy is just south of Fort Dodge. So its probably an hour from Ames, give or take a little. I see that Storm Lake was listed, but coming from someone who goes to school right on that lake, its probably not the best lake to come to unless you have access to a boat. I havent had any luck up here and some people I’ve talked to have the same story. Storm is about 2 hours from Ames, so that is probably farther than you want to travel anyways.

    EC Angler,
I live in Ames and was thinking about getting out this weekend and doing some bass fishing. What body of water did those hogs come from? Crankbaits, plastics, spinnerbaits? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I just prefer to pickle them bass, like my father taught me. 5lbers work the best for meat texture…..

We don’t eat 10lb female walleyes, which is the equivalent to a 4 or 5lb female bass.

I don’t care if you eat bass/eye’s or sheepies, and i don’t want to start anything, because everyone who has a license has the right to keep their legal limit, I just wish it was done responsibly.

I never intended on keeping those fish, but my fishing partner has only been out fishing a couple times in his entire life and insisted that those were the biggest fish that he’d ever catch so both are being mounted. Don’t ask me why. And the little one was eaten. Both were caught at Hickory Grove State Park, located between Colo and Nevada. We were throwing dark crankbaits from shore, over boulders in fairly deep water. We also picked up some nice slab crappies fishing off a brushpile around 9pm using lighted bobbers and Flu Flu’s/minnows. Hope this helps a little.
Sorry about the fish, don’t want to give anybody the wrong impression. Good Luck to all this weekend.

There is absolutely nothing wrong in keeping those fish. No need to apologize.

Each body of water is different. It is no different than keeping 8lb walleyes out of Erie……

You had a license, it’s your choice to do whatever you want with the fish. It was the end of the semester, we all know how tight the budget is by then. It’s hard to scrape up money for beer, let alone eating.

Besides, Slop is a bit jealous right now. His new Ranger isn’t the fish catchin’ machine he thought it would be. I mean, he takes reel guy fishing and they blanked. Then this week he blanks again. At least he isn’t bringing in short fish like some members of their club.

PSS. Sorry guys, it’s nice out and I’m stuck in the office. Who better to pick on than the bass buys!!

They should make for nice mounts.. I don’t catch them big enought to mount

Kooty–I haven’t caught a fish since REEL GUY stepped foot in my boat. I need something to break the curse he left upon me…lol

EC–I gradumatated from ISU and used to fish “the Grove.” Caught my biggest bluegill ever and many a nice crappie from her. If you want really good crappie fishing, try the spillway on Saylorville during the spawn where Big Creek dumps in.
