Are you talking about the New Richmond, Long Lake or the Stone Lake, Long Lake? Cause both are north of bloomer, but i’m not really sure which one is on HWY 40
April 26, 2005 at 3:44 am #359429Good question. It’s just north of Bloomer about 10 miles I’d say. NOt up as far as Chetek. The other I know is farther up above Chetek. I fished there last labor day for the first time. With all the boat traffic we didn’t do too well. I caught a few smallies, one 5 lbs who’s goin on my wall . But I was just hoping for some help in finding the walleye in this lake, with any tips. Thanks

The walleyes have been down due to “spearfishing.” There was a slot last year, but there are some nice fish in the lake. Do you use the landing off of Hwy 40? If I knew where you went in, I can guide you around a little bit.
April 26, 2005 at 2:42 pm #359511I can offer up some info as well. I have a cabin within 10 minutes of there and have been fishing it regularly for the past few years. The walleye fishing is good but there’s tons of smaller ones.
This lake gets it’s fair share of recreation during the summer months so plan accordingly.
There’s some decent muskies in the lake and is definitely a trophy smallmouth fishery. I’d like to encourage the bass chasers to put the 5lbers back. They’ll approach 8lbs if left to grow and it’s not terribly uncommon to find a few crossing the 6+ class. 5lb. might be a great feat on some lakes but is only marginal for this fishery. Not to take anything away from anyone’s fun or downplay a great fish, just pointing out that this lake will do ya bigger.

April 26, 2005 at 9:57 pm #359617Yep……. and the lake got a LOT busier after that show aired too!
There’s a lot of water available and plenty of structure to fish but I’ll give you guys a mid/late-summer tip…… Fish it in the dark! Where and how can vary but going after dark is key to staying on bigger fish. Learn the lake in the daylight before venturing at night though…. there’s room for some if you don’t.
April 27, 2005 at 2:09 pm #359755Yes I use the landing right on HWY 40 near the campground. Before last fall I really didn’t know much at all about the lake. I didn’t know the size of the smallies in there. I am kind of dissapointed now that I kept that 5lb to get mounted. I’ve talked now to several people who said those are common. I guess I’ll keep out for a while to get a bigger one. Anyway, if anyone could point me into the direction of getting onto some nice ‘eye action, that would be great! Thanks alot!

If you head across the open bay towards the west, follow the northern shoreline once you get out of the main part of the lake. Go almost to where you have to turn around, but watch for a large tree that has fallen partially into the water. I snorkeled there last summer and saw walleyes stacked like logs, one on top of another. It was crazy!! We tossed jigs in there later that day and ended up catching some nice eyes!
