It is pretty funny. But I think the 4 stroke makers could use the same comercial, the only differance would be the sign in the beginning, rather than saying 4 stroke outboards it would say 2 stroke oil. From what I’ve seen it’s cost is a kick in the balls.

BRP was brilliant releasing this comercial! Consider they did not have to pay for air time, and just production costs! We are sending it all over to people who hunt and fish! Brilliant!

As for the cost of two stroke oil, these motors use about a quarter what my carb 150 uses…and with the appropriate reflash can use the more expensive e-tec oil at an even more frugal rate. 4-strokes used to have a few advantages, but there isn’t one point they can illustrate as a plus any more. stronger acceleration, faster, just as fuel efficient, just as clean, tons cheaper upkeep, lighter..the only chink in the armor would be long term durability, and they’ll have to wait a while, if ever, they can use that in a counter-ad. Plus I love the smell of two stroke oil…growing up with snowmobiles, dirt bikes, and outboards I associate it with fun.

Here is what it cost to run oil in my 90HP Suzuki for 100 hours beteween oil changes:
    6 quarts of Suzuki 10W-40 marine grade oil @ $2.95/quart = $17.70
    Replacement oil filter = $10
TOTAL $27.70 plust tax lets call it $30 even
Divide by 100 hours (oil change frequency) = $0.30 per hour

    Now, for the E-tec
    1 gallon of XD100 Evinrude ETEC oil = $30
Optimum cruising speed feul efficiency per E-tec performance bulletin 4.18 gallons per hour (90 HP E-tec on 2004 Ranger 169 Ghost)
    Oil to feul ratio 150:1
    4.18 gal per hour * 1 gal oil / 150 gal feul * $30 / gallon of oil = $0.84 per hour

By my calculation, the E-tec is more expensive to run from an oil maintence standpoint. If I paid a dealer to change the oil, it would be pretty much a wash on cost. I do not own an E-tec, so if I am off the assumptions (oil to feul ratio, etc) somebody chime in. From what I have heard, these motors run anywhere from a 50:1 to 200:1 ratio depending on motor load and rpm, so I figured 150:1 is pretty fair. The price for E-tec oil came from a local dealer. If somebody has a different price, let me know and I will recalculate and edit this post.

I’m not trying to bash on E-tecs, I think that they have a lot of good features going for them but I do think that the whole oil change and cost do do so is really hyped up in their promotional media.

    Pete,

That was a very scientific comparison, touche’. What BRP is sensationalizing in their ads…as far cost of ownership is a 36 month maintenance schedule based on published owner’s manuals. Most of their comparisons are also based on Yamahas because they have a manufacturing agreement with Suzuki. These 36 month maintenance schedules (and I don’t have a four stroke variety in front of me) include the initial service at 10 hrs? I know, I know most people don’t do it…but it’s in there, e-tecs don’t need it. Is there a schedule for your motor for valve clearance adjustment? or belt replacement? E-tecs don’t need anything but injection oil for 36 months, you even can easily winterize it yourself via the onboard computer. I am not bashing four strokes…but my dad is a BRP engineer and has worked very hard to bring these motors to market, and we are all very excited about the benefits. I will check the four stroke 36 month maintenance schedule on Monday and edit if necessary.

I believe that’s how 99% of their pro staff felt after hearing their engines wouldn’t be ready for the tournament season!

Hope the standard issue purple thong protected ‘stuff’ during impact…
