Tiller motor question

This weekend I had a chance to run my new 40hp E-TEC on pool 4. The motor was smooth, quiet, and powerful. My only complaint was it is a absolute beast to hang on to! the handle pulls really hard to the right (facing the motor). I tried to adjust the tension on the motor that makes it harder to turn but found that it was already set as tight as it would go. I don’t know if this is something that
E-TEC tiller motors always do but I know my 25hp merc didn’t do it at all. Am I doing something wrong?

Make sure that the motor is mounted “level”. Also, if there is a “fin” on the bottom of the motor, by the prop, you can adjust that to compensate for torque.

Whenever possible trim the motor up to allow less torque on your arm! I had the same problem with my old tiller boat, until I began to trim the motor! Even at low speeds when the torque is the greatest! Give it a try!

As mentioned, you need to adjust your torque tab. Move it opposite of the pull. So if it pulls right, turn it left. It may take several tries to get it right.

I’ve got a 60 horse merc. tiller. I had a really hard time with the torque on mine as well. I adjusted the torque tab located under the cavitation plate over and over again without much luck. Then I tried it without the tab and it was perfect. MY solution was to cut the fin part off of my torque tab and re-install it. Now I just have a flat plate and the torque is gone.

I’m not sure you want to get out your hacksaw quite yet, but if you can’t get it right, try removing it to see if the torque goes away. If it does you might give it a try. You do need that tab in place, but the fin might be your problem. I assume the torque has more to do with the hull of your boat and how the water is funneled by it than the motor itself.

My E-TEC has a lot of handle torque if I am running with the motor too low. I would suggest tilting it up while running until you blow out the prop, and lower it until the torque disappears. There is definitely a sweet spot, and you should be able to find it easily. Otherwise, the trim tab spoke of earlier.
