    I grew up fishing there.

It is a really tough lake to learn and fish.

The structure is basically a big sand basin/reservior. It has some breaklines and a couple really subtle rock bars.

I know Dave C does some serious bass fishing out there and I believe he does very well!!!

As far as species, there are nice walleyes, bass (lg and sm mouth), pike, crappies, and even sunnies. There is also a TON of carp and bullheads. There are even a few decent channel cats in there.

There is alot of recreational boat traffic out there to deal with. My best walleye fishing has been always right at sunset for about 1 hour, with slip bobbers and chubs.

Come high noon, it is tough to find a walleye bite, as it is with most typical lakes. This lake is also not a deep lake, except by the dam, where water depths reach 40+ feet.

Go to the Southern Lakes forum and there is a thread there about the lake. The DNR plans on stocking walleyes in there!!!

Gary,I agree with you it is very tough, and as far as doing well, the best bass bite is in the fall.
There is a window for walleye around opener that the walleyes bite very well along the rip-rap by the dam the crappies also bite very wellat this time.
Shore anglers do very well because just like the bass they are biteing inches off the shore line, the dam side drops-off very fast and as the water gets more and more stained the water colum with oxegen gets smaller and smaller.
There are a lot of good fish but also tons and tons of forage.
If anyone wants to give it a try give me an e-mail.

Just west of Hwy 52 I saw some people fishing on the cannon river in some fairly fast water. Are they trout fishing?

Crappies. That is a good crappie spot early season. I used to take the kids down there. It is pretty shallow, but they are there!

The Cannon River has very great fishing for all species,I don’t know much about the trout other than when we caught them they are big.
The locals say fish the river in the summer and the lake in the winter, this is the reason why I have put so much time in on the lake, the challenge against the norm,it has payed off with 20 inch bass, large and smallmouth, nice white bass, crappie, walleye and in the fall very nice northern in the 8 to 15 pound class, put they will not jump in the boat, you must work for them and will pay off.

From the Cannon Falls on down, to Redwing (primarily close to Welch) is very good trout fishing for Rainbows and Browns.
