Lower Unit Lubrication

I just bought a boat that has a 70hp Johnson 4-stroke and I am going to change the lower unit oil. The manual recommends Johnson lube but I have a few tubes of Lubrimatic Hypoid 90. Is this safe to use or should I go with the Johnson?

Im interested in the answers to this one myself. I dont use the cheap motor oil but i do use the cheap stuff for the lower unit. Never really thought about it i guess.

I used lubrimatic in a 1997 115 yammie I had while for 5 years while I was in the Navy stationed in Fla. I took that boat offshore up to 60 miles ONE WAY. Its quality oil, and meets specs…I never had any problems. I did however change it twice a year.
Since I have a 2 stroke, I still need 2cycle oil. I have been using AMSOIL injector oil for that. I have found that I my consumption has gone down by about HALF of what it was using the “ficht” oil the dealer said I HAD to use.

I run synthetic in the lower unit and I use synthetic 2 cycle oil. I personally will never go back to regular oil in either situation. Since I started using synthetics I have never had an engine problem. Before that running regular oils my outboards hardly lasted 3 to 4 years. My 91 60 HP Evinrude which I had to have rebuilt running regular oil it stuck the rings at 3 years. Since the rebuild and synthetic it has only ever had the carbs adjusted other wise there has never been a wrench on that motor.

    Just My Two Cents

If you do a little searching in the forums…about a year or so ago, there was some very in depth threads about lower end grease and oil.

If I recall, basicly it’s all made by four or so companies…with differant labels and colors added.

For lower end grease, because it’s enclosed and in a water bath (so to speak) John J. and I prefer (creamy) peanut butter…it foams less.

Personally, I use whatever the manufacturer recommeds..(although I didn’t do this in the past) The only reason for this is that if something happens to the motor…I won’t hear the “you should have been running Yamurcrda lube”…or whatever. Legaly they can’t void your warrenty…but for 20 bucks over the course of a year…who needs the hassle.
