Attached (I think) is the yellow fin tuna I caught last Saturday in Cabo San Lucas. Quite an experience left the docks at 7:00 am, stopped to get a quick 11 peso fishing lic. no i.d required just your name. Headed out only to return. forgot the ice for the beer and soda, block form, soon found out what an ice pick is used for (not for attacking another human being). No safety video, had to find the life jackets on my own. Two hours out full tilt finally slowed down and put out what looked like large tube baits, four poles out 15 minutes later 3 of the four drags began to sing. Deckhand a little slow to get to the poles lost two and I reeled in a small yellow fin. Lot’s of dolphins, I guess for some reason that where there are dolphins there are tuna. Got the poles back out and two more poles had fish one got off I set the hook on the one pictured. They said it was a 30#er I think more like 15 at that. It did cause a littl pain in the forearms to reel in. Seemed to leave the hot spot for some reason. Ended up trolling back to the docks for the rest of the day with no more action. Almost think that they did not care if we were on fish or not. A good time am glad I took dramamine as the swells were very BIG.

Hey zoomer, I was in Cabo last weekend also. I was going to do a fishing trip, but the people I talked to at the marina and at the resort said they had a nice boat ride, not much action, so I didn’t go. Where did you stay down there?

Ritt14 I stayed at the Fiesta Americana 1st class all the way. We also had a great meal at the Trailer Park restaurant AWESOME. What else is there to do besides fishing??? We also did the snorkel tour thing it was ok pretty lousy gear had to hold your mask on to keep it from leaking and the fish did not have the brilliant colors that they did in Cancun. Nice boat ride NOT!! 2 hours out full tilt into the white caps my shoulder still hurts from hanging on. I had heard the nice thing about cabo is that you do not have to go out far to catch fish!!!

The wife and I went shorecasting in Cabo a couple of years back and my wife caught a 63# yellow tail tuna. What a riot. She was totally exhausted after 45 minutes and wanted me to take over. The guide we went with thought she might have a line class record so he told her that if she gave it to me the record wouldn’t count. She said who cares, I’m tired. I took the rod from her and fought the fish for another 20 minutes before the guide was able to get ahold of it. We cleaned the fish and packed it up and took it home. When we got back to the states I took the fillets which were about 40″ long, 9″ wide, and 3″ thick, and steak them. We had 52 1 1/2″ steaks that were absolutely amazing eating.

    Zamer,
Whats the difference between yellow fin and yellow tail tuna. How did you get all that meat back to the states? Did you just cast lures out from shore or did you use live bait?
