I’m finally going to get out of the stone ages and buy a digital camera. My uses will primarily be fishing and hunting photo’s, as well as a lot of family photos. I’ve got an 8-year old daughter, 3-year old boy and a 17 month old boy. I want to be able to gather a lot of memories for the future. I don’t think I need anything top end, just a basic, good quality camera. Looking for suggestions.

    Thanks!

Here’s a recent thread on the topic that had a lot of responses and some good info.

I myself love the Sony cameras. I have had great success with them. My suggestion is to look up consumer reports a few months back it might have even been December 2004. They will tell you what you should get for what your doing! Personally, if your planning on printing pictures of the kids and the kids w/ fish, nothing below a 5 megapixel!
    Good luck

Kodak is pretty good for the money. I’ve been impressed with how easy it uses.

I went with a Nikon, middle of the road. My best advice would be to budget for a memory card that holds alot more than the stock one. I’ve had the Nikon for about a year now and all is well. I suspect they are all pretty good.

For a first digital camera Kodak is great. I have one it is very user friendly. What I like about Kodak the best is the software to put on your computer. Makes downloading, emailing and finding your pictures EASY!

Thanks everyone for the replies. It sounds like there is alot of good responses to the Sony Cybershot, so I think I’ll find the model that works for me and go with it.

I’m looking to go rather cheap, say $250-$325. I’m thinking 4 megapixels would do the job.

I got a Nikon Coolpix 4100 4.1 megapixel camera for Christmas this year. Its a nice general purpose camera that does everything I need it to do, which is primarily pictures of friends at parties, etc and come summertime, it will be used for fishing pics. It has a lot of good options and as long as you don’t want to blow up pictures bigger than 8×10, the 4 megapixel should be all you need for general purpose photos.

I’m no expert by any means, but this is what I have and what I know about it. Good luck finding the camera that suits you and your purposes the best.

My son asked to borrow my digital to go to DC! I decided to buy a cam for him to take. As i was looking at them at Office Max and amazed at how expensive they can be, I looked over and there was a combo pack of a HP Photosmart 7660 Photo printer and an HP photosmart 435 digital camera for $129.00. This is the same camera that I paid much more than that for! You cant go wrong! Check out Officemax they had other combo packs too!

well…. I spose Im not the best person to talk to in some ways… because I am pretty particular about what I would want in a camera…
the needs you listed were simple.. and frankly any of the cameras particularly from major brand names would fill those needs…..
myself if I was looking for a point and shoot….
Id want image stabilization… such as that found on the canon powershot S1 IS or the panasonic DMC-FZx series of cameras… these cameras have large optical zooms of 10x-12x.. and the image stabilization really helps deliver sharp shots instead of blurry ones… these cameras make the point and shoot I paid nearly $900 for just 3 years ago look like a toy…. and run from the lower 300 range to around 500…. so if your looking for something that will do a bit of everything you can consider those….
if your looking for something just pocket sized Id probably look for water proof so I would not have to worry about it much when Im fishing/hunting…. such as the brand new just released olympus stylus verve… going for around 250-300……. and its a 4mp…..
when it comes to MP… Id not worry about dropping even to 3mp.. Im here to tell you the quality of the shot means more than the MP of the shot…. what really KILLS your shots is blur and noise…. I dont care if you got 50MP.. if your shot is blurry and/or full of noise… its gonna suck…. if your serious about doing a bit of research or just want to check on a camera youve heard about… I think that http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs.asp is very hard to beat….
