I was considering converting my existing trailer to a swing tongue since my third stall is short and would like to take advantage of that space. First of all I was wondering if anyone has done this conversion and how much time I would spend doing this? Secondly what would I end up spending doing so? Do they make kits to do this?

    Thanks in advance, Mike

I bought a whole new swing tounge piece for my trailer, that was factory made. Cost $100 This tounge is a 6 foot piece that goes from the very tip(coupling) to past where the trailer starts to Y out. There were a couple of bolts near the Y area which I needed to remove. I had to cut off the trailer wiring harness, and feed the wires out. Installed the new swing tounge, and fed the wires back through and then reinstalled the coupling, saftey chains, and wiring harness. Long story, longer…check with the trailer manufacturer..they may make a swing tounge for your trailer.

I have done this to my galvanized Winter boat trailer….not a big job at all. It took 2 of us about 2 hours, but could have been done in less than that if the other guy wouldn’t have gotten distracted a dozen times. The key element is to jack up the trailer frame, and block it well, so there is no weight on the tongue or tongue jack. After that, it’s just a matter of unbolting the old one, slipping out the wires, and reverse the process to assemble it. I know that Cabelas sells swing tongues for Shorelander trailers, and I know boat dealers can get them for most trailers. I believe mine was less than $150.

I had a buddy of mine who is much better with a welder than I am custom make me one. I’d attach a picture to give you an idea of the design, but the boat is still put away (although not for much longer). It turned out very well, and I have more faith in it than I do in something store-bought. All in all we probably had 2 or 3 hours into unbolting the tongue, cutting, welding, reattaching the tongue and painting.
