AmWatson,
I fished three of the four Tour events last year on the FLW Walleye tour. (Illinois River, Devils Lake, ND and Lake Oahe, SD)
It was a great learning experience. If you go into it with the intention of learning everything you can from the pro’s, then it can be a great experience for both you and the pro. If you go into it with the idea that your going to win alot of money, then I don’t thing anyone is going to be real happy if you don’t actually win some.
When you get to these tournaments, it doesn’t matter what the weather is doing. They still hold the tournament. They may cancel a day due to winds but for the most part, plan of fishing despite rain, cold or high, dirty water.
I was fortunate enough to pre-fish with Scott Steil at Devils Lake and Lake Oahe. That was a great time in itself. Excellent fisherman and great guy to fish with. Treated me just like anybody else.
I also pre-fished with Joe Wilson on the Illinois river. We got stuck with some really bad conditions. River rose 8 feet the first two days we were there and it was as dirty as any I’ve ever seen. Needless to say, fishing sucked! In no way, shape or form to I blame this on Joe. He was trying to do whatever he could to figure out something that would work. Many other pro’s were in the same boat and the first two days of the tournament proved that the majority of the field was having a tough time even catching one fish much less a limit.
You need to be prepared to go and fish thru any or all of the many different conditions that could pop up at the time of the tournament.
Keep a good outlook and hope for the best. It is a worth while endeavor and you will learn a great deal from the pro’s.
