I am pretty sure you know what you really want to use If you “just” want to get a turkey, use a gun. If you want a challenge, use the bow. But then again, if you are planning on using a Double Bull blind, there really isn’t a challenge when they get as close as 5 yards . Well, I guess it is kind of a challenge, figuring out how to shoot when they are really close to the blind. This will be my first year to try turkey hunting in the spring as well. I might even take the bow

Gutpile, i’ve bowhunted for turkeys and its the ultimate. You can hunt from a blind or a tree stand, i prefer a stand, i hunt 10 ft off the ground when hunting turkeys because they can’t smell like all birds and because of thier eyesight and all the other turkeys that might be in the flock with a big one. With all those eyes looking for anything that moves fox coyotes and humans i see better numbers up close in a stand. I’ve had whole flocks walk right under my tree and just walk right on by. Bow hunting turkeys is a rush and a half.

why not take both along? I just watched a tv program the other day where a guy had both and the tom just wouldn’t come in to gun range (I think it stayed out about 40 yards or so)… the guy thought the pattern would be too wide and the velocity of the shot would not be enough and the shot would just bounce off the feathers. He used a range finder to get an accurate distance and then used his sight pins on his bow and stuck that tom though both wings! At fory yards! Incredible shot and incredible video! Good luck and keep us posted on your success!

There always a little conservative on the tv about distances you can kill at. If you shoot a 3.5 inch 12 gage 40 yards is easy. I killed one last year at 50 yards with a xxxfull turkey choke and winchester 3.5inch copper coated 4 shot. He dropped on the spot. If you know your guns pattern and its capability kill shots are a lot longer than the TV shows recomend. I myself would not feel comfortable taking a 40 yard shot at a Turkey with a bow.

I’m real good with a bow, even won some 3-D and indoor tourneys. I’ve been turkey hunting for about six years and I always have used a gun. It took me four year before I got a turkey. I didn’t give it a 100% when I did turkey hunt. I would hunt in the mornings and fish in the afternoon. But to use a bow the first time going out, good luck.

PS. One tip if your going to use a bow, use a good blind.

Oh yeah, one more tip, you better pratice sitting down shooting your bow. It’s alot different than standing.

    Tip three, use a gun

I’d say if it is your first year out to use a gun. It is challenging enough your first year. I know I tried using a bow the first couple of years out and wish I wouldn’t have. It got me angry. I guess it is up to you….but I’d get a year or two with a gun to see how things work then go to the bow…
