I like Diawa the best. Have never had any major problems with any of mine.
After a season of great experiences, I am in the process of switching all of my spinning reels to Shimano Symetre reels. Three words for ya: NO LINE TWIST!
i can’t afford to fix reels at all when i go fishing. it’s hard to catch fish without a line in the water. shimano or quantum.
brook trout is right the shimano symetre is the best reel on the market for the price. I have 3 and when ever i get some spare money will buy more. I love these reels.
Jeremy,
THe shimano’s are all I have in my boat for spinning reels. I have a mix of symetre and stradic’s in my boat and they are all as reliable as the first day that I bought them. They take the abuse in the heat of the summer to the frigid sub-freezing temps for us winter river anglers.
Shimano has my vote!
My vote goes for the Avocet gold series reels. They also make a silver series which is a good reel.Abu Garcia makes a Cardinal series spinning reels that are a good reels also.

The Mitchell Avocet Gold 2000 has been a very good reel for me. I mainly use them in combo with a Berkley Pro Series Lightning Rod.
Fin-Nor made a fantastic reel about 5-6 years back… the Mega-Lites I believe they were called. Incredibly durable for the money. Since then they’ve changed the design and price and I feel that there are better reels out there for the money. Shimanos are hard to beat but there are a ton of other good choices as well.

There is not a reel mentioned that I’d say was NOT a good reel. I’ve used, and still own a couple symetries, but have switched over to both the Garcia 501, and the Avocet Gold 2000. I feel I get the same quality reel for much less initial investment. I’ve also tried and liked the Pfluger President spinning reel.
In the long run, reels are only as good as the care you give them.
I really like the Garcia stuff and have for many years. I am in the market for some new spinning reels myself for this season and thought I would chck on some other brands just for the heck of it. I stopped out to Hooked on Fishing here in Rochester and picked up one of the Okuma spinning reels to try out.
The price was right! Now I just need to get on the water and see if I like it.
Pflueger reels are my bread and butter. The President series has been the best for me. 10 ball bearing and really smooth.
As an equipment junky, I have tested many products but I don’t put anything to the wear and tear that guides and tournament anglers do. I only learn what is the most consistant.
Shimano is hard to beat. I don’t think a Sedona will quite match up to a Symmetre or Stradic, but they’re darn near bullet proof.
Garcia has some nice stuff out there too but I tend to stay with their smaller reels. Weight, smoothness, bail action…….. I just don’t care for the bigger models.
Pflueger….. every one I’ve touched has been a pleasure!
Tica – Their Cetus line is AWESOME!
Mitchell – The Avocet is the smartest thing these guys have done in years. I don’t know about the durability, but they’re nice to use.
Quantum – They have some user friendly stuff too but seem more prone to having a lemon or two in the bunch.
Diawa – The upper lines seem to be good. The cheaper ones are……… cheap.
Pinnacle – Inconsistant. One is good, the next one bad. As far as their spinning reels go, the only ones I’ve liked and that have lasted awhile are the PKF Limited series. The deadbolts were smooth as glass but kept failing with the anti-reverse.
St. Croix – The new Avid is really nice. Time will tell if they’re durable. I’ll be testing a Premier this coming spring.
I have some lesser known brands like FLW, Gander Mountain, Heddon too and they can be surprisingly wonderful as well as just surprising. I’d say to test out the mechanics of the reel and make sure everything feels smooth. Compare it to other offerings. And if you have the time, do a search on ebay. The less of a reel you see for sale, the less fishermen are trying to sell the one they have, which is good. Don’t judge by dealer offerings.
I have sedona’s as well as my symetre’s and i do not feel they hold up as well as a symetye. the symetre has an aluminum frame compared to the graphite of the sedona and holds up better INO. But the sedona is a nice reel at a litte over half the price of the symetre.
Keep us posted on the okuma reels Dustin. I had a guy that fixes reels for a living tell me that some of them have junk berrings in them that would only last a year or two. I’d like to know if thats true or not. Hope its not because the price on them isn’t bad. Thanks
I like Shimano, Sedona series. I think they are great for the money and have had no problems with them yet. I own 6 of them, and plan on purchasing 6 more this summer for my guests. The 2500 is what I use, and matched with 6lb, Stren Manathin, seems to place a few walleyes in my box once in awhile….lol.

You got my curiosity up dude! What are you doing to your reels that requires an aluminum frame to out perform a graphite one? Maybe I’m slow but I don’t have any wear and tear on any of my reel frames and I do fish hard!
Please…. ……. you must enlighten me!
I’ve broke them befor on Pinnical reels. That is why I will never buy another one. The dead bolts are by far the worst.

When i was younger and couldn’t use a baitcaster because i got to frustrated with the backlashes I would throw everything with a spinning rod and reel, I do use baitcasters now though. When i would throw hard pulling baits like a big spinnerbait with colorado blades or a bucktail I would seem to have my reels with a graphite frame break down on me. They still worked fine but never would feel as smooth after a while. I know years takes its toll on reels but i thought that they just didnt hold up as well. The ones i had with aluminum frames did hold up. These were all shimano reels. Maybe it was just my bad luck with the reels i dont know. I havent gone away from a graphite framed reel they are fine its just my opinion a aluminum frame reel will hold up longer. This could all just be some bs i got stuck in my head cause of a bad reel too but anyways thats why i think aluminum frame reels hold up better.

At the very least……. I feel I know ya better now! I always find it interesting to learn how people come into their preferences and such. I know I’ve developed some “character” on my own too! Besides, it’d be a dull world if we all did things exactly the same……. right?
Fish on dude!
