it depends on what your main objective is: walleye, bass, northern, etc. also, spinning verses baitcasters. i have shimano saharas on my im8 gander pole, and quantum XLoos reels on my ultra, micro and super micro lite poles. all have 6lb test stren, but i fish everywhere with everything for everything everywhere. if one species doesn’t bite target another. those would be the two best priced reel companies for the quality. it all depends on how much you want to spend. always check ebay and start to figure out prices and which ones you like and why you like a certain reel.

I’m not sure what you’re looking to spend but if you want a good set up that won’t cost a ton of cash, I suggest the Berkley Lightning Rod, Gary Roach Signature Series (Berkley) and a Mitchell Avocet Gold Reel (AV-G2000-C). It’s been a great set up for me, for under a hundred bucks.

How much are you looking to spend? Do you want a “do all” combo or two seperate combos? If the answer is 2 combos, I’d look for a versatile baitcast combo as well as a versatile spinning combo.

The spinning combo should be able to handle most pike and all walleye and bass if it’s 6’6″ or 7′ long. It’s user friendly for jigging, lindy rigging, bobbering, or casting light weight lures and baits to the shallows.

The baitcast combo should be heavier duty. 6’9″ or longer and at least up to 25lb. line test recommended. This will allow you to cast lures all the way up to 1 or 1.5oz. or handle situations like weeds and slop. You can troll, pitch, topwater……. with anything 1/4oz. and larger if you have your reel dialed in right. This way you’re more prepared for a tougher fight from a bass in thick cover, a big walleye in cover, a big pike, and maybe even a muskie!

Hope this helps some but if you have more detail you’d like to cover, let’s hear it! Plenty of guys here with successful experiences to help you along.
