Why do you fish Tournaments?

You guys are right on par with my sentimate… The resource would not survive if not for the fishermen… To us the water systems are as dear to us as our own family.

I didn’t mean to poke fun haasfish, I was simply saying that in generalities everything we do, have, or are trying to abtain is at the cost of our resources. “Ethical” is a matter of opinion, because we as “intellegent” creatures can not accept our shortcommings. If we were perfect world humans would not exist. There is no place for man and harmony in this world we have created. We instead choose to consume for our own pleasure and I am as guilty as the next guy.

I’ve fished a few. I’ve had some real good and some real frustrating experiences with them. For me the biggest incentive was to have a fishing outing written in stone that the kids and my wife couldn’t scuttle (short of illness and death). The potential for fame and fortune is kinda exciting too.

There are plenty of reasons that I fish tournies. Comraderie, competition, sense of being involved, pride, the thrill of the hunt are just a few but the main reason for me is there are very few things that get my adrenaline flowing like that first few minutes before the horn or the feeling of the first hit of the morning.

    Or maybe it’s because I don’t have a boat.

That’s great, go like heck when my son and I are anchored along the shore in a narrow slough. You guys could slow down once in awhile and still have no problems hitting bottom.

As long as he keeps a safe distance and is not weaving, I’d rather have a tourney guy go by me at wot than to slow down a few yards away and plow like he doesn’t have a clue.

I would like to add my opinion on this subject. I just wish that I could afford to be in a tourny to begin with. but I look at being in the walleye searchers club and fishing with them guys, I would have to say that I have learned alot and I think that knowledge is the best thing that I would be able to take from a tourney. and It is a good bonus to add the money in the winners circle, but like i said before, it takes the money to get into it.

    Slop,

never did get upset with you, just expressed my opinion on the various tournaments I have been involved with. And granted, sometimes it is better to have someone run open by you then slow down and create cruiser like waves.

But, the bottom line is I have been commercial fishing, fishing, hunting and trapping on the Mississippi since the 50’s and don’t have much time for the touraments.

Nonetheless, I feel strongly that literally all of the folks on this board want and do contribute to the betterment of the river. My comments about tournaments are simply one person’s opinion.

I have fished two walleye tournaments in my life and I plan to fish many more. My brother and I fish together in my Dad’s boat. Eight years ago my Dad started fishing tournaments and my brother and I have always been eager to compete against him. Four years ago my Dad was in the Hunter’s Point tournament on Mille Lacs. That day my Dad said that my brother and I could take his boat out fishing. We got on the water one hour after tournament start and were off an hour before the end. I suppose we boated atleast 50 fish that day and we had two legal ones in the box. My dad and his partner caught over 100, but they didn’t get any that they could keep. This summer we fished against my Dad and Uncle and ended up placing way above them. We weighed 6 fish between the two days and they didn’t weigh any. We give my Dad crap all the time for this, but he still catches two to our one when we are all three in the boat.

I am really looking forward to getting into more tournaments. I enjoy meeting new people, fishing of course, competing, and I wouldn’t mind the spotlight either. The biggest thing holding me back now is lack of resources and a boat. I think a few people on this sight know that I don’t pass up the chance to jump in someones boat and go fishing.

I like fishing tournaments. I try to enter a lot of the small ones in the area that are for seperate classes of like, walleye, bass, catfish, rough fish, norhern…ect. I try to make a little money doing these little things. The past couple of years I’ve fished a few bass tournaments and walleye tournaments as a co-angler . I’m looking forward to the IDA tournaments this year. I love the competition, and brotherhood between everyone. I am the first to admit I’m not a great fisher, but I can hold my own. Good Luck to everyone this year!!

I fish a tournaments because I enjoy the friendships I’ve made from fishing tournaments. I’m not really a competitive person so I don’t put everything into them thats needed to win but I enjoy the time on the water with and around friends.
    Thanks, Bill

I fish tournies for the competition, comraderie and to see how well I do compared to others. I enjoy the sharing/recieving of what worked, what didn’t etc after weigh ins. Always looking to become better and help someone if I can.

I enjoy the competition and the comradely but it’s the learning experience that keeps me coming back. Granted, the guys that figure out the fish for the day aren’t going to give away all of their secrets, but where else can you put together that much knowledge in one spot. Most guys are willing to give general information and if your observant you will pick-up something. I’ve fished tournaments since the late 70’s and I’m still amazed at what you can learn, and re-learn in a day competition. About the time you think you have it all figured out Mother Nature through you a curve ball. Then someone else come along, looks at it from a different angle and comes up with a better answer and you find yourself saying “why didn’t I think of that”.

I don’t fish as many tournies as I used, but “diddo” on what riverfan just said. I walk away from every tourney learning something…most of “what I should of done” . Kind of like guide trips, it forces you to be as efficient as possible and keeps you focused. Like always…somedays you are on and somedays you should have put the boat right back on the trailer and headed home. But those good days are what keeps you coming back!
