Ever had something you knew would be worth doing.. and yet somehow never really got around to it? Well.. Ive gots LOTS of those things.. I should write them down on a list and make sure I DO them… one of those “things” was contact the Wildlife Center at Carlos Avery refuge right next to Forest Lake (the city) to see about setting up a photo shoot… they have a number of packs of wolves there.. on Saturday mornings its open to the public for something like $5 for a tour…. I opted for something more… you can pay more for what I consider a priceless experience…. basically a personal tour… of the site… and spend time in one of the enclosures with a pack of wolves… I had good luck in that the light conditions were perfect… and it was snowing lightly… I had bad luck in that I dropped a 1GB microdrive on the ground without noticing right away and a wolf chomped it up *sigh*… which greatly limited my productivity….. but I have three shots from the event that I like quite a bit.. and I thought Id share them with you…..
the first one shows just how intently a wolf can watch you…. this one was watching my companion and “body guard” in the pen… while I was “shooting”

the call of the wild its been named… but by whatever name you call it the howl of a wolf will send shivers down your spine…. and at times there must have been 20 wolves howling at once… if you can imagine the effect of that… I think its still echoing in my soul….

Im sure the crowd who takes “bambi” to heart imagine that a wolf is a cute and cuddly creature that would never hurt you….. I admit… on the surface thats exactly what they appear to be…. and yet in an instant that can change…. never forget they are wild predators… its their nature…. they can be savage if needed… and we all know how sweet and gentle nature is…. without that savagery the wolf would have died out long ago….. I was able to capture just a glimpse of it… but its quite striking…..

    Truely…awesome Mr. R Eyes!

    Thanks for posting them!

IF I ever had a chance to take a picture of a wolf…it would be a blur from the shaking!

    Very…very nice!

PS…I think I woke up next to a relative of the last picture this morning… I didn’t say that out loud, did I?

Those are great picts Rivereyes.. Hearing a pack howl that close to you, it would definately send shivers up the spine. To bad about the gig card.. That has to sting a bit.

Great photos. That is a great place to visit. We take the kids there each fall for the annual harvest howl. It was cool to watch as one of the staff that the wolves considered dominant they would slink and scury around her. But when anouther staff cam near that was not dominant they would snarl and growl.

Im sure that if you hung out there for awhile you mircodrive would show up again.

    RiverEyes,
Once again your pics are excellent. I really like the third pic. It reminds me of the facial expresion on a couple of my Packer friends!

Outstanding pics, you certainly do have a talent, Rivereyes.
That third pic is highly reminiscent of the better half before her first cup of coffee in the morning!

I’ve seen wolf in the wild a few times in Canada. It is very hard to explain on how their howl makes a person feel.A awesome creature to watch though.
