Does anybody have any info on tying your own buckttails and where to get the material? I want to be able to tie a bunch for next spring this winter, but I don’t know how to get started. Any info would be great. Thanks

Tony, I’ve bought a lot of tying equipment from Ebay. All my vises have come from there. As for hair, thread, etc… I would check a Gander Mtn. They have lots of stuff too.

http://www.staminainc.com is another good place to check.

Follow the above tips and get some deer tails. Heck I cut em off road kills. Split the underskin and peel em off the tail bone, you’ll save 5-7$a piece. They are easy to color with Rit dye(instructions on the box).

Here’s a great help tying bucktails

are you wanting to tie crappie jigs??????? along with walleye jigs as well I would suggest kiptail…..comes in great colors as well as you can tie both jigs with the same tail……bucktail works great as well but the kiptail to me moves better in the water ……….Ive tied my own jigs and flies over 30 yrs and really think the kiptail does the trick………cabela’s, bass pro, or feather-craft carries both types of tails…..hope this helps and enjoy getting into the world of tying….ron

    Tony,

Consider getting some of tht Kevlar fly tying thread. I use it when I tie up Bass Bugs. You can really pull hard with the stuff.

Your first few jigs probably won’t look very good so don’t be discouraged. it takes a while to get a feel for the material, how much hair to tie at one time, etc. You’ll get the hang of it.

There’s nothing better thn catching a fish on something YOU MADE. Even better is when you budday asks where you got that hot bait and you can say “I tie them myself!

Where I live in Michigan the DNR and County are very thankful to people who remove deer carcasses from the roadway, it is not illegal.
I notice in Wisconsin you guys paint em orange? Does someone get paid to pick them up? If someone got paid to pick the carcasses up here it would then probably be illegal.

I guess you should check your local game laws first. Thanks for the tip Jeff.

I think the deer are being painted orange this year so people cannot use them to obtain an EAB tag

you should be able to find stuff from any flyshop, catalog or online. Ebay has good stuff, but you need to check to see if they are reputable

Another way to find info and ideas is to do a google image search.
At googles home page enter your keywords like maybe “pike fly”
but before hitting enter select the images option right above the keyword input box.
Then hit enter and you get a search like this.
    http://images.google.com/images?q=pike%20fly&hl=en&lr=&sa=N&tab=wi

That way you can see if the pics on a web page are what your looking for.

I’ve gotten lots of fly tying tools and mylar tinsels off ebay.
