    Well said Alvin.

This thread is bound to get heated…there’s no stopping it, but let’s try to keep it civil.

I for one, find it hard to overlook that fact this guy is hmong. Too many of us have seen members of their culture break/ignore, or plain have dis-regard for our laws.

I myself, am tired of America harboring these refugees, whether it be hmong or whoever, and have them NOT assimilate to our culture, many of them getting special treatment to boot. I’m not saying they have to give up there ways, but if they are going to come here, then fit in with society.

And when they don’t, how can people not feel resentment towards them? The “old school mentality” simply isn’t acceptable, and i would think that american’s are tired of it all through the nation.

This whole topic is bigger than a single hmong. and if this were a white person (as many of you will respond with–that all kinds breaks laws–and they do), i’d say fry his white-trash too.

    I dislike everyone equally

    This is a horrific tragedy.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends of those unsuspecting hunters that were gunned down, things like this just shouldn’t happen.
How could anyone…and I mean anyone….be so ruthless and have such disregard for human life??

There isn’t a punishment severe enough to fit this crime.

This goes way beyond race here! This terrible, terrible tradgedy points to everything that is wrong with society and wrong with hunting laws and trespassing laws!

Yeah….you are right….I guess I was just thinking about how waking up that morning they were just looking forward to a great day of hunting with family and friends.

One thing that I’ve noticed is that in the articles that I’ve read about this tragedy, is that they keep refering to this man as a “deer hunter.” I wish they’d refer to him as what he is…a criminal. Real hunters respect laws, others property, and the safety of everyone out in the woods. They don’t shoot people because of disagreements.

Like others have said on here, lets avoid playing the race card, and remember the families of those that were lost in this senseless act of violence.

    Well said slop bass.

I’ve sounded off on this issue a few times on different boards.

Down here (Chicago), we don’t havce a problem with a specific race that is poaching. Well, unless you consider white to be a specific race, then I stand corrected. Now that kinda sucks to hear, but it IS the truth. Thereby showing that it isn’t a race issue as Slop Bass pointed out. It’s everyone. I turned in a father and son last week. And like I said..they weren’t Hmong.

I spend alot of time in Tomahawk,WI. I took my wife with me….ONCE. Ya see, she’s an excellent fisherperson as well. She even runs a pretty successful internet fishing company which a few of you know (hint). But….there’s a problem when we’re up in the northwoods. Let me explain. Ya see, she’s half Thai and half Phillipino. Born and raised here , mind you. But I guess it’s just the “look” that makes people in a place like Tomahawk,WI kinda off limits. I got one “Hmong” remark from one ####### bait shop owner already.

Racism sucks. It has no place in our sport. It has no place in our world. Every time a different race other than a white guy gets caught doing something in our sport, it’s all over every board in a day like a linch mob. Remember something..There was this real bad guy out there who commited some pretty horrible crimes about 60 years ago. I saw him speak in old films but I couldn’t understand the language. I think it was German.

Before you freak out, I’m half German and half Italian. So I’ve got Hitler and Mussolini’s history to contend with. I think both of them did just a little more damage than the Hmong people.

Prosecute every criminal equally. But I don’t see how pointing out that the person is Hmong makes any addition to this story other than throwing in racism.

Last report I heard was early this morning, so I might be wrong here, but that report said this person was not wearing blaze orange, but rather camo. He actually chased down some how these victims, and shot them. It also said that a couple were shot more than once.

He was not a hunter, he was a criminal. Why he is in the jail instead of the morgue I do not understand. It IS huntung season, and gun related accidents DO happen!

And yes as was stated this guy is no Deer hunter he is a killer!!!

I hear ya, JLDII. Some of the Sconie hunters I know would have taken him out back there in the woods. But it is easy to sit in front of a computer and talk. Not so with an assault rifle barking at you.

Race has nothing to do with it. “Normal” people of any race has appreciation for life.

This guy is either insane or jacked up on crack.

    Sorry….

I’m curious as to the background of this Murderer. Why was he down in that area alone to begin with? I guess i want to try and understand how/why somebody could do this..

No, he’s from Cambodia, and we’d like it if they all would stay there!

Why is it that Minnesota has to be the Hmong capital of the USA. We have the largest population of them, and we have another 5000 that are supposed to be shipped in over the next year. Its time to start closing our boarders off, because the fabric of our society is becoming much to diluted for the good of this great country. If other cultures can not adapt to the ways of our society, they have no business being allowed to live here.

“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me.
I lift my lamp beside the golden door.”

Anyone recognize this quote? It’s the inscription on the Statue of Liberty. Before we start saying one race of people don’t belong, remember where your ancestors came from. It wasn’t too many years ago that the Irish were being discriminated against. Let’s send all of the Mc’s home.
But can we keep the Guiness????

    JLD II,
Do you think it’s a good idea to put a racial comment out there like that when you’re trying to run a business catering to guys on boards like this?
Just to make my point (because I can’t stand ignorant racist comments), that’s like saying all Germans should have been locked out after Hitler killed a few million people.
You aren’t German by any chance, are you?
Sorry to have to voice off on this subject..but could we please stop entering the guy’s race into this. Dahmer was a white guy, right? Shouyld we run all white people out of Wisconsin? C’mon….
It was a horrible tragedy. Pray for the families and leave it at that. The laws of our country do not recognize race. Neither should you.

I don’t think this post should get nuked either.

Something like this happening…yeah we can sit around and bash people all we want..there was 1 man that pulled the trigger and killed those hunters. It doesn’t make sense to anyone of any race with a rational mind.

Something we should consider as a group of avid outdoorsmen/women is this…..is there anything that can be done to prevent things like this from happening in the future??

Hunting and fishing is a priviledge and with that priviledge comes a tremendous amount of responsibility to the environment and other hunters/fishermen.

Who knows maybe it is time to make people accountable for proving they are a responsible sportsman/woman before selling them a license for anything.

    Too Late!!!!!!!!!!!
I lived in Iowa and we have had Hmongs from Minnesota coming into Iowa for several years. I tried months ago to tell my representatives in Iowa that something was going to happen. I also wrote to the Minnesota Legislature. We have had instances of tresspassing, Hmongs aiming their weapons at landowners, taking more game than allowed, kids kicked out of private woods by camouflaged Hmong with weapons, it goes on and on why didn’t anybody listen. We have to do something about the Hmong following the laws. I’m not against the Hmong people, but I am for getting control here. We moved to Wisconsin in July. Please write your state represenattives about this problem. It’s already too late. Pray for that family.

There are 2 issues here that should probably be addressed seperately:

    1) hunter kills landowners

    2) Man found poaching on private land

#1) is terrible, horrible, inhumane, no excuse. I dont know, maybe he thought that they were going to kill him or somehow he was in serious legal trouble, I dont know. My mind just doesnt work in a way to imagine how it is possible to do such things. I have to believe that he was afraid of something and didnt do this out of sport. NO NO NO excuse either way. Just trying to figure out what in the HELL he was thinking.

#2) How often do people do this? Is it common to have people hunting on your land? I know my buddy gets seriously pissed when his friends hunt his land in Otter Tail county without telling him 1st. So I dont know if this is more common for Hmongs or not. I know that they are frequently getting in trouble for abusing our natural resources (at a rate much higher than would represent their population percentage). This is a serious problem that needs to be addressed-unsolved it will only result in more tension.

    Dave,
I hear you. And I agree for the most part. Except for the part about the Hmong people frequently getting into trouble. I think that’s just what the news decides to tell you/us about.
I heard about this instance on a 3 second blurb here in chicago. The guy’s racial background never was mentioned. Only that a MN hunter shot 5 WI hunters.
This tragic incident aside, I think it’s only the Hmong poachers that get press up your way. I mean, I’ve got 12 tags on poachers myself here (Yeah, we hunt them like some people hunt deer…only we shoot them with a cell phone) and not a single one is Hmong or any other ethnic background other than what I am. Maybe it’s just that different up there, but I have to think that just because a guy who’s poaching is Hmong…he’s gonna get a little more talk than a guy named Jones or Smith.
Has anyone up there tried to talk to the DNR to get the rules and regs published in different languages?

I HAVE NOT HEARD THAT THIS WAS A ASSUALT RIFLE, BUT EVEN THAT DOESN’T MAKE IT RIGHT IF IT WAS A ASSULT RIFLE,THEN THAT IS ANOTHER CHARGE ON HIM. MY QUESTION IS WHAT DO THESE PEOPLE HAVE TO GO THROUGH TO GET A HUNTING LICENSE, TO BY A GUN AND DO THEY HAVE TO GO TO HUNTER SAFETY COURSES BEFORE ANYTHING, IS IT THE SAME FOR US ? THE PEOPLE BORN AND RAISED IN THIS COUNTRY OR DO WE JUST GET TO PAY FOR EVERYTHING FOR THEM NOT ONLY THAT BUT NO MATTER WHAT RACE THIS PERSON WOULD BE HE WILL STILL GET 3 SQUARES A DAY CABLE TV FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE ON OUR DIME, MY THOUGHTS WOULD BE FOR HIM TO BE ON THE FIRST PLANE BACK AND IF HE HAPPENS NOT TO GET THERE WELL TO BAD OR TURN HIM OVER TO HIS OWN GOVERNMENT AND LET US KNOW WHAT HAPPENS TO HIM, WE KNOW HOW THEY TREAT PEOPLE LIKE THIS IN THEIR COUNTRY!!!

    MAKES ME SICK !!

Um…I believe this IS his country.
Again…we didn’t send Dahmer back to Germany.
I’m sure our courts will do what is called for.
This is a horrible subject but maybe it will have a positive point in educating all of us on racial issues.

Just for the record it was not an assult rifle it was a SKS 7.62 mm semiautomatic rifle, a common hunting weapon.
