So, this last weekend was suppose to be the last weekender to visit the Mississippi River for the year. We are all packed and have 2 hours driving time under our belt. I call Falling Rock to let them know that we would be using the Float on Sunday. I am told that we can only use it if we have a boat of our own because the girl who ran the boat quit. Ok, So there going PLAN A (there was only a PLAN A to begin with). Then we think, ok, lets go check out Clement’s Float (ya, I know, they are not as nice as Hubbards). They were packed. Ok so lets come up with PLAN C. We went to Blackhawk camp ground and rented a pontoon boat (for $70.00 bucks, plus a $50.00 deposit ). The damn thing took more them a half hour to start, and we were told that one tank of gas would last us the trip, but that there was a spare tank on board just in case. Ok, so we move on our merry way and try some fishing with no luck at the first hole. We move on and have some plans, BUT things started to get hairy. Not only did we use up the first and spare tank of gas, but also had to buy another tank and a half just to get back. The motor kept giving us trouble, and I should have left the “better half” at home – and I’ll leave that one alone. And once we get back – the girl running the place for the day tells us that because we used the spare tank of gas, we loss twenty dollars of our deposit. So, After $90.00 – ask me how was fishing – not one fish was seen let alone caught. And then there was the motel room – I seen better rooms in a jailhouse.
What a way to remember the last trip of the year.

Which jailhouse? Boy that sounds like a trip that won’t be soon forgotten. Remember that things can always be worse. The pontoon floated at least. . I’ll have to look for some of my photo’s of the ice shanty myself and a couple of friends rented up at Lake of the Woods last year. Once you see those you will cheer right up. Are you already starting to plan your next years trip? Steve

I am planning my vacations for next year. I usally take one vacation (5-7 days) a year. I am really in love with the river thou that the better half came up with the idea of taking a day or weekend trip. So this year it was a total of one vacation and 3 weekend trips. Next year I am going to take two vacations thou (and of course there will be more weekend trips). I am hoping (if I don’t have a boat by then )to rent a house boat for one of my vacations.

What kind of boat are you looking to buy? I know there are lots of good deals in the classified right here on the site..Everts is a good final destination for a vacation. You can even catch plenty of fish right off the floating dock. Hes also got boats for rent and you could bring a motor and you would be ready to go. Steve

If you want a great fishing trip and you don’t have a boat, plan to get a couple of people to split a guide trip with one of the guides from here. Everything is taken care of for you. No worries. You won’t be disappointed.

As I tell my 5 children, you could be living in Afghanastan. Put life in prespective, as a resident of the USA we probably have it better than 95% of the people in the world. I believe most of the world would trade my problems for thiers. By the way I just had to buy a new motor cause mine is blown to the tune of $8K. This is after I had $70K in flood damage a few years ago. As my neighbor said if you didn’t have bad luck you would have no luck. Want to have some luck try Everets resort in Red Wing and hook up with one of the guides out of there. I’ll guarantee they’ll set you inthe right direction.

CG, Mama always says “Life is like a box of chocolate, ‘never know what your gonna get”.

My memory…is funny that way. I remember the really GREAT trips and the trips from he$$ vividly….all the trips in between are a little foggy.

    No tickets?

No Briank, no tickets this time . The officer who had me pulled over had someone else (even in the same spot) pulled over . I made sure I kept the lead off while I went through that area.

Yes, I really do know that things could be worse then they were. I just needed to complain and vent due to the factb that the last trip of the year didn’t go so well. My dream is just to move out there SOON (not as soon as I would like) and not have to worry about making the trips.

You should buy a boat….then you can get away from someone elses problems and have your own!

YA, I know I need a boat. Working on it think. It is not that easy for me – don’t have a couple grand just laying around. I am just a poor pre-school teacher. We don’t make that much and I just can’t seem to pick the right lottery numbers.

Hi Carpgirl, keep an eye open for deals in the papers and at this time of the year you could probably pick up a nice smaller unit at a very good price. Or it may be better for you to just watch for a good deal on a smaller tiller motor in what ever size you could handle carrying maybe a 7 1/2 hp size. That way you could just rent a boat at the different resorts which are very resonable and you wouldn’t have to worry about towing and stuff. I’ve been thinking about getting rid of my rig and picking up a smaller one so I can get it in the smaller bluegill lakes easier. If you figure out what type of rig or motor you would like just put it in a post here then you will have lots of eyes watching for you. Have a great day.
