I have a couple questions about lead core I know you can answer. First what do you use for backing 10-12 lb? Second whats the best knot to use to tie the backer to the lead core? And finally how long of a mono leader do you use off the lead core? Sorry for the questions I’ve never tried it before. I’ve always been the ol split shot in front of the crank kind of guy. Thanks in advance Todd.

I cant help ya on the backing I dont run any but you will save alot of lures if you switch from mono to fireline for your leader!!

Yes sir I use Fireline. Let me tell ya, I can bite through Trilene 20lb Catfish line, but cannot bite through 14lb Fireline. Its good stuff.

I used Fireline as my leader and now use Power Pro. I like it much better.

Why do you like it better?(power pro)

Isnt it thicker?? That would take alot of action away from your lure!

When comparing 30lb Fireline to 30lb Power Pro, I find the power pro has a much smaller diameter. I don’t know about the other weight lines as I only use 30 lb Power Pro in yellow as my lead line leader.

I’ll have to admit I take it even further….. I use 65lb Power Pro for the leader.

Whats the thick weaved together stuff? I thought that was PP.

I use 6 or 10pd fireline, 65 you could tow a boat with that stuff.

What is the point of using a leader stronger than the lead. When you snag hard don’t you break the lead?

I have done line break tests on 18lb leadcore. It typically breaks upward of 40lbs when new. (Sometimes well over 60lbs) The 65lb PP pretty much allows me to pull stumps around or straighten out hooks when snagged. Another advantage is the PP can take a beating especially in areas of sharp rock or Zebs. The line diameter of 65lb PP is about the same as 12lb mono or less and is super soft and limp. I do not feel it takes away any lure action. My leader length is 6-7 feet. Of course, this is a river presentation. My lake leadcore setup is different. I use a low vis 10 lb mono for a leader. Next year it will be P-Line. My leader length for my lake set up is about 50 feet long.

    Hope that helps.

Most every time I put my lure back in the water I check the line for nicks, If its ruffed up its gone! You could easily get by with less then 65 pd pp if you check your line! That has to be thick line.. over kill…

I havent lost a lure on the core in ages! But what ever works!!

6 to 10 pd fireline works for me and Im sticking with it!!

If it isnt broke dont fix it!

What kind of knot do you all use to hook up your leader to the lead core line ?

I use a small barrel swivel. Connect the fireline with a palomar knot, and the lead core with a simple double overhand knot, after stripping a couple inches of the lead out of the end. Never had a problem with this set up, and much easier to tie than some of the other knots which may be recommended.
