Just curious as to the hot colors for ringworms on the Mississippi and the types of jig heads being used along with color. I still troll cranks alot but hear so much about these ringworms in the spring and fall, I figured I’d change it up a little. Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated. Thanks

Check out this website they have great colors and everything you should need.
September 10, 2004 at 6:34 pm #320583Thanks Blue Fleck. Quite a variety! Any particular favorites and are they mostly jigged vertical or casted? Thanks again!
September 10, 2004 at 6:43 pm #320585You have to give the Fintech nuckle ball jig a try!
You can fish them like any other jig or fish them weedless!!
They are a stand up jig so your bait is always the first thing the fish can see. They work wonders for me!!!And plastic colors, it can be differnt everyday!
September 11, 2004 at 6:12 am #320650Zone “R” jigs by http://www.fin-techco.com and ringworms by http://www.bfishntackle.com in the fall on the miss or rock river you can’t beat it. You will give up bowhunting to fish walleye, trust me I thought I would never give up bowhunting in Oct. but if the walleyes are biting I’m fishing. If not I’ll go hunting only then.
September 11, 2004 at 6:16 am #320652Just one more. I got this new camera down. How is that good looking guy on the package? Thanks buddy
September 11, 2004 at 1:31 pm #320661There are a number of ringworms on the market. Pretty much all of em catch fish (if you put it in front of fish!) Lindy is coming out with a new one on shelves soon called the Thumpin’ ringworm. It is a little softer plastic and 1/4 inch shorter. I had some design input on this bait and think it will be a winner…but they all are if you know how to use them!
September 11, 2004 at 3:31 pm #320581Hey Teddy ‘ol boy…you and me…In the boat…you with your thumper plastic and me with my BFT Ringworms and we will see if they are any different
Not All plastics are the same !!!
September 11, 2004 at 7:15 pm #320680I’d like to do a Ted n’ James side-by-side this winter if you’re up to it Ted.
September 11, 2004 at 7:42 pm #320681I would like to come along, as an impartial judge of course

September 12, 2004 at 1:44 pm #320716Your boat or mine, Dave? Sounds like fun. Guess I had better contact Takasaki and have him send a crate of Thumpin’ Worms…they are only good for 3-5 walleyes each because the plastic is so soft. Remember the last time we fished for walleyes ? I felt like Frankie Avalon in a Mickey Mouse club fantasy…kept saying “Annette ! Annette!” Must admit you look better in the new IDA hats than you did in that tight sweater and mouse ears !
September 12, 2004 at 1:53 pm #320717Sounds like fun, James…I look forward to learning a few tricks from you. Ecnook says you are a phenomenal hook. I used to be a pretty fair angler myself before the surgery. Now most gutter winos have better reflexes. Darned carphole tonneau syndrome, dontcha know.
September 13, 2004 at 1:01 pm #320785I think getting all three of us together at the same time would be even that much more of a hoot! I haven’t fished pool 9 in some time. Maybe once the grass blows through this fall I’ll come on down and get to fish with you and Mr. Koonce and we’ll do some playing with some new toys.
September 13, 2004 at 1:10 pm #3207899 is pretty good right now…10 and 11 have a fair amount of grass floating down…
September 13, 2004 at 1:36 pm #320629There’s lots of grass on the way. Pool 7 has been horrible lately.
September 13, 2004 at 2:20 pm #320792Ted;
No offense……..
I’ve fished with James 2 times now……….The guy has this uncanny ability to catch fish………..Sorry, but I want to see this “schooling”!!!!!!
As for Jame’s Ringworms and K-Grubs…………I will continue to buy them for 2 reasons:
1) The color patterns and design have proven to catch fish. It isn’t a bunch of “junk” thrown together to sell to fisherman. It is actuall plastics designed for the river. The color patterns, length, thickness, design are targeted to meet the habits of the river walleye………
2) Dollar for dollar, you get a big bang for the buck. There are alot of plastics in there for the cost. AND they last more than 5 fish!!!I’m going to stick with what works, and support the local business………
September 14, 2004 at 10:29 am #320941Going back to my initial statement about ringworms, i still maintain that if you put most of ’em in front of fish with the right color and presentation that you’re gonna hook up when ringworms is what they want.
Not about to diminish the lures which James and Dave represent. I have fished with Dave, who is an outstanding hook…and understand that James’ abilities are legendary.
When you live on the river like these guys do or fish all over 220 days a year like i have done for the last 30 years you’re gonna catch a few fish.
Over the years I’ve had the opportunity to fish with guys like Al Lindner, Babe Winkelman, Roland Martin, Spence Petros, Gary Parsons, Gary Roach, Keith Kavajacez and many more ‘big names’ in the industry.
Dave Koonce, James Holst, you…or even I can catch as many walleyes as these famous guys— on any given day. True, it’s little nuances which can spell the difference in finesse presentations like a jig/ringworm bite…but walleyes are just as peculiar as people. And the little dance you do can be just want they want— on any given day.
Being a good walleye angler is no different than being a starting NFL lineman (or for those of us with delusions of grandeur) a starting NFL quarterback…on any Sunday, ya know?
I would like nothing better than to get out in the boat with James and Dave and spend the day netting their fish. Maybe that’s why I guide and have no desire to be a tournament guy. I honestly have nothing to prove, at least in regard to ability.
One client i used to guide really wanted to outfish me. No problem. Go ahead. But when he showed up with the “Banjo Minnow” as his secret weapon and i told him his wife could catch just as many fish on a tube jig rigged backwards–and then she proved it I got his selection of banjo minnows for a tip and haven’t heard from him since.
Ah, the coffee has done it’s job. Time to download. Probably won’t see any ringworms. But tapeworms, hookworms and pinworms are a possibility. Should really quit feeding on roadkill, dontcha know.September 14, 2004 at 2:27 pm #320984Hey Ted!
I would have aggreed with you prior too fishing with James. However, when the guy has the pattern so dialed in to what the fish want, he has come up with the perfect “setup”. Yes, 90 out of 100…….a ringworm is a ringworm…….But, I want a shot at those other 10 fish.
I did pick up some cheap ringworms at a local bait shop. They were loose in bins……I asked if they were BFNs…I was told no……But given a name similar to them…….The twister tail at the end are not the same………plus, they were more expensive…….
I’ll stick with BFN.
September 14, 2004 at 2:44 pm #320989Teddy!
I went back and read my first reply to you and started to wonder if I came off like I was ‘calling you out at high noon’ or something. If I did, I apologize. That certainly wasn’t the message I was trying to convey. Koonce has told me you’re a gas to fish with and I wanted to get in on a little of that. We can do a little side by side product testing too. Those munchies sound a little like a Berkley Pulse worm… a little shorter, a little fatter. I like those in vertical situations more than for the shallow water casting or dragging senario but they would have their time and place. I know when I vertical jig a ringie I often pinch off the first half inch of the head out of preference and that would put both products at about the same size.
Gary… I know what you mean abou those bulk bin ringies. They’re too thin and the tails are a fraction of the size that they need to be. Grab a luck-e-strike, venom, or other ringie and compare body and tail to a BFT.
September 14, 2004 at 4:59 pm #321011Ted,
When James and I get in the boat with you you need to plan on bringing your buddy….what was his name ?
September 14, 2004 at 7:50 pm #321075My longtime buddy and fellow firefighter Dangerous Dave Dvorak, the 230 pound human Labrador Retriever with very muddy paws! Dave has been halfway to certification as an idiot-savant for years…just can’t sit still long enough to finish the test. He is owner of Hessian, the amazing and wide ranging German Shorthair. Have ya ever seen a guy running AHEAD of a shorthair whistling for it to catch up? Dave is gonna try bowhunting this year, if he can get his trees stand completed…yes, treeS stand–30 sheets of plywood laid end-to end in a hundred yard circle so he can pace a little bit. And you ought to see ol’ Double D fish! have you ever put a minnow on a stinger hook in addition to the main jighook under tough cold front conditions? You buy the bait and Dave will show you his “Walleye Frenzy” rig…TWO stingers with a minnow on every available barb. Only saw him use it once–two casts, two snags and we were out of minnows!
If we can all get together this fall I can promise you a profoundly entertaining adventure…back to ringworms: How many ringworms can DD stuff up his nose? Don’t know. I usually only have a few dozen in the boat at any one time.
Have you ever seen a guy french kiss a pike? Dave will do it for a quarter and the pike will come out on the short end, I gare-on-tee
How many rods can Dave break on a single trip? How many do you have? Dave is a truly amazing unit. Put the two of us in the boat together and its like mixing fire and gasoline. Lets’ go fishin!!!September 15, 2004 at 2:42 am #321154As long as ya’ll release every thing, cause ya’ll could
kill a system in short order.September 15, 2004 at 3:10 am #321160Not sure about Ted but between Dustin, Koonce and myself we likely don’t keep two whole limits of under 20″ walleye in a year… between the 3 of us. The fun is in the catching… after that it’s all work. Besides, I like cow better than fish any day.
Ummmmm…. steak. It’s what’s for dinner!
September 15, 2004 at 10:36 am #321173the West wasn’t won with salad…one more thing about my buddy DAve–and this is God’s truth–one time we we up fishing Sturgegon Bay and got blown off the water. Went to the Moorings and Dave consumed four one quart bowls of chili–and 7 ribeye steaks…then wondered why he had a gut-ache!
Must admit I’ve kept four “eater” walleyes already this year for personal consumption. Pike are better eating!
