From the website of the 4th ID:

A memorial to the fallen soldiers of 4th Infantry Division stands in a former palace of Saddam Hussein that currently serves as the division headquarters. The statue was created from the remains of two statues of Saddam that 4th ID destroyed in July.

[Gianni comment] The statue us an American GI kneeling before the grave of a fallen comrade. An Iraqi child consoles him in grattitude for the sacrifice the Americans have made in her country.

The country is quickly losing a populus that remembers Dec. 7, 1941. But if you get a chance to talk to someone that does, you should hear their story. They’ve witnessed 2 days of infamy. They understand better, a bigger picture. What happened in 1941 was much more threatening to our way of life than the cowardess attacks executed on Sept. 11, 2001. The whole world was under the threat of invasion and warring chaos. But the bigger picture that seems to be evident in the aged eyes of learned and lived wisdom is that there will always be someone, somewhere, wanting to rise up and overpower everyone who disagrees with them. Because we are not exempt from this, we must never forget that our freedoms and our way of life has been purchased by the blood of our own citizens. Prices have been paid and the rest of us are the benefactors. Freedom is never free. It is never guaranteed. It won’t take care of itself.

Our leaders are doing something today that has never been done in America’s history. We are seeking those who stand to rise up against us and see them agreed to disagreement, or removed from American threatening possibilities. If we thought we were invincible, this wouldn’t be so. But we have seen the value of what we possess, any and every time it has been sought and tried to be stolen from us. Our leaders are banking on this. This has been supported in our military sacrifices all over the world. Our soldiers, our citizens, our missionaries, and our representatives.

Tributes like this…….. I hope they never disappear and I hope I never lose sight of these realities. Not in an effort to always stir up inner hatreds and hurts, but to stand humbly and forever grateful for the sacrifices I couldn’t make myself. And to see all my prides focused only on their honor, and to see them remembered.

Does anyone else still feel the emptiness? That hollowed out feeling whenever they watch an old movie and the New York skyline still displays those towers? It reminds me of a time in which we, the citizens, had mostly forgotten about truly hard times and life was indeed good, all things considered. I pray we can re-establish the “good times” in this country. But I also pray……… that it is never forgotten……. not just what happened on historic dates, but that someone, somewhere, is preparing to challenge that peace and prosperity again, and for us to defend against it at all costs, throughout all our days.
