I feel bad for the people who are losing their jobs but if this means there’s one fewer idiot tearing around in circles over the top of a cabbage bed then I’m all for it.

“HEY CULLIGAN MAN”… I AM WITH YA. I WOULDN’T MIND NOT SEEING AND HEARING THOSE THINGS ON THE WATER WHILE I AM OUT THERE FISHING. STRANGE THAT I GET UP AT 4.30AM AND HIT THE WATER ONLY TO LEAVE THE WATER BY 10AM SO I DON’T HAVE TO DEAL WITH THOSE SOB’S. THIS ARTICLE IS A GOOD THING FOR ALL OF US FISHERMEN AND FISHERWOMEN. ITS ABOUT TIME…THATS MY 2-CENTS.. SEE YA
I know I’m the minority here…………And I don’t own a jetski………..
But the water is recreation. That means: sail boats, jet boats, cruisers, jet skis, water skiers, and yes, us fisherman…………
The jet skis have just as much for rights as anyone else…….
You, as fisherman have more rights, in the sense that you can beat your lures at ones dock @ 6am fishing, or even night fishing next to ones dock, but the jet skier has specified hours to ride………And specified areas to ride………
Don’t complain about the jet skis, until you complain in the same breath of air about the 20′, 300hp ranger bass boat flying @ 75mph………….
A distant relative is the VP for Marketing at Artic Cat. They are in process of putting together a law suit against Ranger because their bass boats are faster than the jet skis ever………Ranger went hard against the jet ski manufactures, making them shut down production and people loosing their jobs…………Artic Cat is now in process of turning the table……….
Food for thought…….
I agree with you Gary. They don’t bother me any more than the guys on shore using a chainsaw or mowing their lawn. I’ve had many more bad experiences with dinks in boats than on PWC’s. They’re no more noisey than a 2 stroke outboard. Don’t make much of a wake at all and for the most part only show up on hot summer days. I’m not even sure how they got such a bad rap to be honest. Actually, I’d love to own a couple of them. They’re a serious hoot!
I fish a large lake that has a jet ski rental business on it. Suprisingly, I have rarely seen any problems with anyone using these. I see more of a problem with the overpowered boats!
Got a few for sale here I’ll sell you so long as you promise not to operate them on this part of the river.
I think the difference between the fast boats and jetskis is the boats fly by once maybe twice. The inconsiderate you know what’s on jetskis have buzzed me back and forth all day long coming within 20 feet of me.
I’ve got a special chunk of lead I tie on my line just for them. It works!
I AM WITH YOU JERRY. IT IS NOT THE JET SKIES THAT BOTHER ME IT IS THE BUTTS HEADS THAT BUZZ ME WHEN ON THE WATER. A GIANT JERK BAIT HAS BEEN CHUCKED THEIR WAY A FEW TIMES..
Yup… disrespectful is disrespectful. Shouldn’t be tolerated in a car, on the water on A PWC or anywhere. I’ve not noticed a tendency for a PWC driver to be any more disrespectful than the average guy in a fishing boat. Actually I’ve found it to be the other way around but I’m sure everyone has a story or two worth telling either way.
I AGREE JAMES, THERE ARE JUST AS MANY RUDE PEOPLE IN BOATS AND PONTOONS AROUND THE METRO AS THERE ARE JET SKIES. RESPECT AND A LITTLE SPACE IS ALL THAT ANYONE IS ASKING FOR. SOME PEOPLE JUST DON’T GET IT, AND I THINK THAT IS WHERE THE BAD RAP STARTS. NO DIFFERENT THAN SOME OF THE HUNTING TRIPS THAT I HAVE HAD WHERE YOU GET “MR. JONES” TRYING TO HUNT BEHINDE YOUR DOG. I JUST DON’T UNDERSTAND WHERE PEOPLE LEARN THESE TYPES OF OUTDOOR ETHICS. IT CRAZY
Yes there are inconsiderate people in boats too. But generally they are not doing it non stop all day long or simply running circles around you just because they can.
I’m sure lakes are different with all the pleasure boaters. Here on the river 99% of the boats out there are fishing. No one in there right mind pleasure boats or waterskis on this part of the river.
Gary and James,
You’re right. It’s the person and not the machine that’s the problem. That being said, I’ve had more problems with recreational guys than I’ve ever had with anglers. The combination of youth and alchohol associated with some (note I said some) recreational boating is downright scary. A Jetskier on St. Alban’s bay just yesterday was run over by a buddy of his (also on a Jetski). I think one’s perception of the problem also relates to the size of the lake. A 300 acre lake is pretty small for jetskis and water skiers, but they’re out there anyway. I have a little old Alumacraft so I tend to fish potholes. You won’t see me out on Minnetonka, Prior, or White Bear Lake for example. I also get out there at 3AM

No probelm here with the jet skiers. They don’t bother me on the river like they would a guy on an inland lake trying to fish a shallow reef or weed bed when noise becomes a factor.
The big tuna boats? Now that’s a whole other story
I’ve never had a problem with them either. The only problem is that I don’t get to ride one of them enough. What I hate is the cabin cruisers that go at half throttle and send huge wakes out and the bass boats that fly by at a gazillion miles an hour. I was fishing at the base of Lake Pepin a couple of days ago and was greated by both. I was fishing a drop off and a red cruiser comes by nearly hitting a wing dam, I just sat there and shook my head. I must have pissed him off because I didn’t warn him. So he had to come back and circle my boat. I swear he wanted to swamp me.
I forgot to mention…out here on the Chippewa we have air boats I hate those people….I’d use stronger words but I know it would get sensored. They don’t care who you are, or where you are. They are noisey and I hate them
