This time of year I use 1/16 jigs and twister tails, untipped, with a slow draw. Any combination of Yellow, sherbert, chartruese, light green and orange are my favorites.

Dose live bait work for crappie? What kind?

The best seems to be minnows, crappie minnows to be exact. I’ve also caught them on leeches and chunks of crawlers. I use pink or orange jig heads with the live bait too. Others just use a plain hook.

I used to fish crappies a lot with live bait, now, I don’t buy bait… My go to setup is a 1/32-1/16 ounce jig head, and I’ve been fishing little tubes they are maybe 2 inches long, I just put them on the jig and start casting. Red and white has been hot on certain lakes, blue and white has been hot on others, and white and pink seems to work really good for me too. I’d also suggest picking up some 3″ white GULP (R) minnow grubs, these for me have taken the biggest fish all season, without doubt, I just put them on the jig the same way as the tubes, but since the size is so much bigger, I usually wait for the gulp until I located fish, since bit are a little less frequent, I suspect because it is such a large bait. Unbelievable how good these little tube are, I know for certain I have has several, over a hundered fish a per person days on the water this year, with this set-up on a lake I’ve watched people fishing live bait and barely catch fish, and we were catching them one after another, after another, I would’ve never believe this worked as well as it does unless my buddy did show me, and boy did he show me… Since hen I converted many other to tube fishing, everyone cannot believe how well they work.

I too fish exclusively with tubes for slabs. For them springtime crappies, my favorite colors are white and black/chartruese on a 1/32oz jig. Who needs the hassle of the bait!
