I plan on it, As i grow into other areas of hunting, i’d like to train him as well….

I guess the first thing he has to learn first is his name…..which is RANGER!!!!

Best thing I have found and used is a book called Water Dog by Richard Wolters (sp). He also has a book on field dogs. But the first half of the book starts with the basic sit, stay, come, heel in detail. With the age to start, and when to move to the next step. Highly recommend.

Water Dog is a great book, I would also highly recommend Gun Dog for pointers by Richard Wolters. You can find his books at Cabela’s

Slop! Nice Pup. Wolters has out a few different books to fit each type of dog. I agree with the other guys great books. I used one of them, I think it was Game Dog. He has probably 6 or 7. (Family Dog, Top Dog, Top Dog II). I used Game Dog in addition to another one?? Not recalling the name, but mainly went off the other one with help form Game Dog. Very Similar. Slop I was also a 1st time owner and trainer. Let me know if you are interested this other book is very simple, staight forward and covers all aspects of training including, electronic collar training. Very detailed. I have a copy of it.

Nice pup Slop! I have a 2 yr old Black lab and she was my first dog too. I used Waterdog by Richard Wolters and just as the other guys have said, I would highly recommend it. Have fun!

    Slop,
Make sure you have all kinds of chew toys. Those Labs will chew everything up in the house, otherwise….

Hey Slop – Nice looking dog. I have a black lab and the wife is talking about getting another one. I have some books I purchased when we got our dog if you want to borrow them. I will look tonight and see if I can find them and get back to you with the titles.

Thanks Everyone for your responses so far….he’s a riot already……I hit some slippers under the couch, and he crawled under it and pulled them out….

Took him for his first truck ride yesterday….he sat in my lap the whole way, trying to stick his head out the window….

are you sure that you didn’t place the dog on your lap and you where the one trying to get your head out the window??? I think that you just figured that if you had the dog in front of you, people would think that you have gotten better looking. I can’t wait to see a picture of the dog riding in the front of your boat as you cruz the water.

    thanks

Hey Slop nice pup! I have two choc. labs my self. Great dogs. I will just offer a few suggestions:
    1. SOCIALIZE the new pup with other dogs and kids/people. You will not regrete doing so!
    2. take the pup with you everywhere you go when possible.
    3. Take him to “puppy kindergarten” They train you more than the pup but it gives you the base to work from and includes some basic obedience. You will also get in some socialization time there.
    4. Don’t expect too much too fast. There will be set backs. sometimes it will seem like two steps forward one step back!
    5. Train to your standards. He dosn’t need to be a “machine” to be a great hunting dog. If your not going to field trial him, he won’t need to be “perfect”, just so long as he gets the job done to your satisfaction.
    6. Wolters books are good. I have used them myself. Remember though, they were written a long time ago when ” giving the dog a good thrashing when he needs it” was an acceptable training method!
    7. I have found that consistancy and repetition work just as well as an E-coller, it just may take a little longer. There are however time when the coller is needed for some dogs.

Well thats enough from me. If you have any questions feel free to ask and I will do my best to help. I am not by any streach of the imagination a trainer and my dogs will never win any trials, but they do what I need them to to make my hunting fun! Attached is a picture of “my baby”! Meg is 5 and really a great dog!
