THE LONG; LONG TRAILER

Every spring while traveling to Rainy Lake I see several camping trailers being pulled by a truck and their boat being pulled behind the camper. This looks like a cool set-up. I have a couple of questions. First of all does anyone here pull a rig like that? Is it legal in all states? Any special liscence needed? Insurance a problem? I live a mile from the wisconsin southern border. Have never seen it done in illinois but have seen it in both wisc. and minnesota. Gotta be heck going thru those fast food drive-thru. Also reminds me of the Lucy Ball and Desi movie Thanks in advance for any info——H

Send a PM or an e-mail to Rocketman he has one for sale and I am sure he could answer all your questions. Let us know what you find out, I have often thought that this would be a good way to go when I retire.

There are length regulations but I’m not sure what they are for each state. I believe they’re generally around 55-65 feet but you’d need to check it out for any state you’d travel in. You also better make sure you have plenty of truck to make the pull. I considered doing the same thing at one time but decided to put a trailer on a seasonal lot instead. I just think you could run into a lot of trouble piggy-backing the boat behind the trailer. Too much to go wrong in my book. Just my thoughts…

Here is a link to towing laws for all states.

In Minnesota it’s 75 feet total, triple towing with 5th wheel only and some highways are limited to 60 feet.

In Wisconsin it’s 65 feet total, triple towing is allowed without a 5th wheel and some highways are limited to 60 feet with a special permit.

In Illinois it’s 60 feet total, triple towing is allowed without a 5th wheel and some highways are limited to 60 feet.

    Hope that helps.

I pull a 23′ 5th wheel and a 14′ fishing boat with a Chevy 1500. It’s a little tricky, but worth the extra effort. I take things a little slower plan my turns a little farther ahead… When I was looking for campers, I thought you could through a hitch on any old camper, but the frame on fold-downs isn’t built strong enough. Now that I have one, I’m not sure I’d want to do it with anything other than a 5th wheel.

I also pull a 24.5′ sprinter 5th wheel with a 1850 fish hawk. It’s a little tricky like was said before, but if you take your time and plan your stops(Gas) in advance,it’s well worth it! Like being home. I pull it with a 1 ton GMC and only had 1 problem and I don’t think that was my fault. Rear ended a guy last year on 694 up by Iten chev. Bad deal,My advice…… Give yourself plenty of room for stopping! If you think it’s enough, Give them another 10-15 feet!
