New trolling rods – Braid vs Mono?

    Hi All,

I am picking up two new 8’6 trolling rods with Cabelas Depthmaster III reels. My question is, should I spool them with braid or mono. I run two long lines right now with 20 lb braid and they work great on the rivers. I was hoping to use these new ones on Mille Lacs and Green Bay as well as the river. I will be pulling boards with them about 50% of the time.

On these clearer lakes, does anyone prefer mono?

I run mono on all of my board rods. 10lb XT or 12lb big game(same diamater). I started this way because that’s what the trolling book used to use.

That stuff is as tough as nails. For super clear water, I guess I always just thought the mono would be better, which is the other reason I haven’t switched.

I do not use my gear as often as many, but run 12# XT as well. Been spooled up for the last four years and I’m good with it. Was going to go 10#, but place I was buying the gear from pointed me to 12# in case I get on Lake MI once a while, and I do. Tossing the dive curves off a little, but that is an easy tweak. Most of the guys on Winnebago, and on the Bay of GB seem to have mono spooled one, unless they are trolling for musky.

I run 14# mono on all my trolling and down rigger rods.

#12 Triline Big Game. It all depends on personal preference. I like the stretch of mono when pulling cranks, less rip outs tried braid last year and switched back. My dad runs power pro on his trolling set up, he likes the feedback from braid. I would suggest trying braid on one, mono on another. That way you will get a feel for what works best for you. Personal preference is the key with line.
