I have a 25K ecoboost F150. Been a Ford guy for a lot of years, and while the v6 gets talked up a lot, I won’t buy another one. Motor runs great and all, but it doesn’t get the gas mileage it promised. None of them do, but pulling my boat I get the same as I did with the bigger v8 in my last truck. No trailer, maybe a 2-3 mpg increase, but not enough to ever pay for the upgrade, plus I’ll be concerned if I decided to run this into the high miles… and knowing that twin turbo is under the hood.

As said, it runs great… just will never pay for itself.

Also been a Ford guy my entire life. After consultation with friends that have EcoBoosts, I went with the 5.0 on my 2013.

The 5.0 has been nothing short of fantastic. The mileage is pretty decent for V8 1/2 ton standards, 16-19 hwy, 12-13 pulling my 18′ boat.

I would hold out to see the 2015s that will be out later this summer/early fall. They 5.0 is supposed to get a boost in HP along with direct injection. There are no hard numbers yet, but those numbers should be released soon.

After all, who doesnt like the sound/grunt of American made V8’s? Even with the factory exhaust, my Ford 5.0 sounds pretty nice.

My sales guy that sold me my ’10 F150 with the last 5.4 has been telling me that the ecoboost in the F150 was never designed specifically for mpg. It was designed for power AND mileage.

A motor with comparable power would never be able to get 20+ mpg.

I know for a fact that the 5.0 gets very similar mpg as the ecoboost, but the ecoboost has much more torque and is more fun tor drive.

Simply put, you can’t really go wrong with either, just don’t expect big savings at the pump with the ecoboost.

Focus more on the rear end gear ratio if you want better mileage. You have 3 options, 3:31, 3:55 and 3:73. they offer these for a reason and I am always shocked when I ask someone what gear they have and they don’t know.

There is not replacement for displacement.
I fear that in time there will be issues with the turbos, but that is just my speculation. I am a fan or tried and true old and reliable.

I’ll second what Cycle Guy said. My 2012 EcoBoost has 14K on it now and I still know i got better mileage pulling my boat with my 2007 5.4 when I had it. Like what was mentioned, I might get 2-3 mpg better with no boat than my 5.4 did. But besides the rumble of the V8 the EcoBoost is more fun to stomp down to pass a car. When the turbo’s get going it’s way quicker than my 5.4 was. By the way, both trucks were identical Crew’s with 3:55 gears.

    I bought a ram 1500 ECO Diesel V-6 empty, 26.4-27.2 mpg.
Pulling my 6500 lb tandom trailer with my Grady White I’m getting 16.2 mpg. Damn good for a full size CC with a 6’4″ box.

I have a 5.0 and I am extremely happy with it. Personally don’t think they are worth the extra money. I think the ecoboost got a lot of hype, but I have friends that have them and they told me that they would not recommend the ecoboost for pulling.

I wouldn’t trade my 07 5.4 for no other truck. The stomp on power when passing while pulling the boat is incredible. Even at 103 thou., The mileage is still around 19+-.

The ecoboost is built for pulling. You will be happy with either option. I run diesels the mil angle is poor with the new bs regs holding me back but I can out run just about anything when pulling my skid steer. Ren an ecoboost almost comparable.

I have a 2012 f150 with the 5.0 and love it. I have a few friends that got the v6 and while they are very happy, it’s not all that its cracked up to be. Solid motor, but in my opinion, go with the V8. Either way you’ll be happy I’m sure, both rock compared to the 5.4.

I have the ecoboost. I drove the 5.0 and it felt more powerful than the 5.4 I had in previous trucks. It also sounded amazing. But after pulling my boat and camper with the 5.4’s I wanted a substantial step up, and the ecoboost offers that without a gas mileage penalty. With 25,000 miles so far, it has met all my expectations. Good on gas when you keep your foot out of it and a mighty tow rig when needed.

I agree. I have 35,000 mile on my crew cap with Eco V6 my first Ford after 8 GM’s. Could not be happier. At least 3 MPG in all conditions then GM V8 with the 4 cylinder coast so called avantage. Pulls my 19′ with 150 4stk to Rainy Lake and back (1,2oo miles) and gets 14.6 for round trip. Pass’s car with boat in tow like it’s not even behind me. That’s with 4 people and truck and boat loated big time. Wife brings enought for a month on a 1 week trip.
I would buy the same rig again in a heartbeat!

I had a 2011 F150 Eco-Boost Super Crew 6.6′ box and sold it with 85k on it. A lot of highway miles, zero problems on the engine. Loved the huge leg room in the back, sold because I went back to a duramax. Lots of power when towing or empty. Fun truck to drive with lots of power.

same here — can’t believe someone buys a new truck and does not know the gear ratio

I just sold my duramax, and bought the Eco-boost.

I tow a 21′ skeeter, you can surely tell the difference in power, the nod going to the Duramax.
That being said the Eco-boost has been a pleasant surprise and handles my rig with no difficulty.
If you are pulling your boat or trailer 3-4 days a week I would go with the diesel. If you are a weekend warrior, the Eco-Boost will do you no wrong.
