    Guys,
In a couple of weeks, I’m heading to the Rice Lake, Sconnie area for a few days of fishing. I hear the mosquitoes are horrendous. My experience with the chiggars over the past years’ has been anything but delightful.
Does anyone have a suggestion for repellent, application tricks, and anything else to keep the damned things off?
Also, and just as important, what about ticks?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Don

I’ve heard putting baby oil on before going in the water will stop the chigger bites.

No doubt you’re gonna get bit. . . .take a bottle of the wifey’s fingernail polish, color’s up to you. Dab a bit on each bite. It’ll sting some but the irritation will soon be gone. Been there, done that- jerr

Was in spooner area past few weekend the mosquitoes are hell. I pulled 40 plus tick off of me on my land one morning. 7 deer ticks. Mostly on the wheeler. Deet repellent for ticks works. I didn’t have any. Thermal cell for skeeters. Only if calm out. Otherwise same repellent will work ok. Hard to avoid them this year normally not bad. I worked at tomahawk scout camp 5 years on long lake near rice lake. Never use bug stuff your body build up a resistance. If you Start with bug dope then you need to use it.

They was stuff called “chig away” we could get from the PX when I was in the army. Worked pretty well.

Chiggers are generally found in long grass. You’re thinking of “lake itch” or “swimmer’s itch” which is often called chiggers, but is something completely different (but altogether miserable, too).

Yep, you don’t get Chiggers in the water. Those are something else.

As far as ticks, I haven’t had 1 tick on me or the wife all spring and the dog only a couple. Yes, I spray it lightly on the dog. It’s made for animals…but NOT cats. It will kill cats.

    Try this:
Get the Permethrin in a concentrate and mix your own.
FF has it for around $20.
Dilute it so you get around .50% which is what the Sawyer product is…all you need is a spray bottle.
With the quart of concentrate, you’ll have gallons of the stuff.
    Country Vet 13.3% Permethrin Concentrate

I spray this on my clothes(everything but my drawers)to the point they are wet. Then let it dry. It’s odorless when dry.
I swear, since I’ve been doing this, I’ve found very ticks on me. I’ve watched ’em crawl 3 inches on my pant leg and fall off dead. It even lasts for a couple washings but I usually give my pants a fresh squirt every time I venture out…just for good measure.

Sawyer makes a premixed version but much cheaper to buy the concentrate and mix your own. You could try this first before mixing your batch.

I swear guys, this is the chit to keep ticks off me.
