Our furnace gave out on us this week. Had a company come in and quote us for a new furnace. Average price was $5500. That seems crazy high. I seem to recall about $2500 last time around. Are these prices that you guys are seeing out there?

I did a new one 2 years ago. Had some add ons my wife wanted. I think it was around 5K installed. You are right, it is crazy high.
Just make sure you get a high efficiency and you will be good to go for years to come. (assuming you stay there. )
May 30, 2014 at 2:08 pm #1413193Most of the prices I’ve seen are from 2500 to 3200 for just furnace, nothing really high end, but high efficiency. Probably about right if that is including new evaporator coil and condenser with the furnace having an ECM blower motor, two stage burner and new setback stat.
May 30, 2014 at 2:51 pm #1413199My neighbor just had his a/c go out, he only replaced the line set, A coil, and outside unit. It cost him $2200 and that was the lowest bid with the cheapest a/c unit. Material, labor, cost to run a business and the skill to install everything properly—it all adds up.

Guess so. I was able to get them to do the furnace replacement for $3500. That’s about $2200 above retail. While I understand business I can’t believe there is that much overhead. He said their profit margin is around 2%-4%.

Have you dropped Moreyes (Kirt Hedquist) a line yet? I think he still is involved with Trane.HRG
May 30, 2014 at 3:25 pm #1413206Last winter I put in a high efficiency Rheem furnace, air and water heater. Mid American Energy is running a 2k rebate so after that, it cost me 6k. Also put in a new thermostat that is WiFi so I can check and control it from my phone, lap top and Ipad. Nice when we were on vacation in Aruba and able to check the temp in the house and make sure everything was working. On the way home from the airport, I turned up the heat and the house was warm when we got home. The other day, both of us were working and the temps started to heat up so was able to turn the air on from my phone.
May 30, 2014 at 8:33 pm #1413236The old 80% furnaces are no longer allowed to be sold or installed, if this is what your replacing they will have to run new PVC tubing to vent the new furnace. I would expect $5500-6k for a new furnace AND A/C unit. A/C units are more expensive now with EPA refrigerant standards driving the cost through the roof. Copper is very expensive now too driving up the line-set cost. The new furnace will also need new ductwork connections, all this adds up fast. Just be sure they don’t “oversize” your A/C unit or you will never ever be happy, it should be similar in size to the one its replacing, assuming it kept the house cool/dry when it was working properly.

Hard to say if the price is high or not? Lots of variables what did he quote you the Builders special buyem by the truck load for nothing or a high end all the bells and whistles?
You get what you pay for just like anything else.
Metal prices have sky rocketed, ref is more expensive and the regulations the contractor isnt going to pay for that.
My favorite is gong into a building that the tree huggers own and their stuff is the oldest junk in the world just like the Volvos they drive. Then they complain about how much it costs to have A/C
May 31, 2014 at 12:05 pm #1413364What AAA said, but don’t undersize either!
I’m not very happy with the company that I bought our A/C from. Among the many issues, they sold us too small of a unit. We ended up going to a larger coil in the plenum to help solve the issues of too small of a unit.
John SchultzInactivePortage, WIPosts: 3309May 31, 2014 at 7:11 pm #1413417I put in a new furnace in January. I believe it was a 95% efficiency Carrier. $3200 and there was a $700 rebate on it and $250 buy back on my old one.
