Hey guys. Just wanted some feed back.. my lower unit on my boat has went out three times in the last year.. this last time it was replaced with all new gears, drive shaft and everything. They only reused the housing for the unit. And only lasted over a month and went out again. Has anyone else had the same issues? The same place has replaced it and im starting to get very mad over tge issue. Has anyone in rochester had any problems with al’s specility fixing their boat?

My neighbor has been very happy with their service of his Yamaha.

When you say “goes out”, are you saying it won’t shift, prop doesn’t turn, makes noise??

This sure doesn’t align with the many, many hard earned dollars I’ve spent at Al’s Specialty Marine.

I’d suggest a civil conversation with Joe, Greg, John, Ryan or Terry.

Something just doesn’t add up. Al’s was founded on quality service. 3 times in one year is insane. FWIW

I had a 90 hp Yamaha back in the mid 90’s that did the same thing. I bought it new from Al’s and they fixed it each time. and eventually found something bent that was causing it.
I know, it was new but they were pretty good to work with so I’d agree with Kurt on having a good conversation with them about it.
I think you’ll be able to work with them and be fair for both of you.

Sounds like the machining of the housing doesn’t line up. If the rear bearing doesn’t line up with the front bearing it will chew things up in a hurry.

In many cases, the die cast, machined housings can be the weak link.

Many times lower units are re built with new bearings, gears, pinions, clutches, and shafts, but if the housings has wear, getting everything alinged and shimmed properly can be impossible. The gears and shimming always take the blame, when fact is, in most cases, the aluminum casting is wore beyound fixing.

Have had alot of heated beates on this over the years as my company used to make lots of lower unit geras and shafts.

I agree with recent responce, a civilized conversation is in order.

    Good luck.

By goes out,i mean it just acts like its in neutral, wont shift.

Dont get me wrong, they have taken care of me and fixed it for free but this time my family was up north and ended up costing me few hundred to rent a motor.

The motor older 50 horse evinrude. I also wondered if it was the housing..
