A non member friend asked about a problem he’s having. My answer was Super Glue…but it wasn’t what he was looking for.

    Any help?

i can’t seem to hook these damn shinners I’m buying without them falling off.

When i have them sitting in the water they work themselves free.

Any tips on where to hook them for both slip knot rigging and lindy rig cast and let sit?

VMC makes some live bait hooks that have double barbs and I’ve found retain the minnow much better. Haven’t noticed a decreased hookup % BC of the barbs yet which I was concerned about, maybe worth a shot.

The H2O jigs seem to work well on them. Hook down the throat and out the side of the back. This lets you slide the minnow up the hook enough to put the metal bait keeper through the lip. Think Granrud had a photo of this a few years back.

If he doesn’t want to buy all new hooks, some have used a small #5 bead-sized piece of plastic worm or tube after the shiner is hooked in the manner that he hooks it. Additional benefit is as an attractor or target for the fish.

Sounds like he is still fishing. Some of these suggestions seem like they would kill the shiner of impeded their movement?

This has worked well for me in the past too.

You would think the down the mouth and out the back would kill them pretty quick but it done right they keep moving pretty well.

Granrudes version of this might of been hook point in the mouth, out the side gill plate opening, turn hook around and stick it back through the top of the minnow. This to allows for the bottom lip of the minnow to get hooked on the bait keeper. I tend to stick to the down the throat.

The VMC Moon Eye or Finesse Half Moon Jigs(for big shiners)work well too. I go in the mouth and out behind the head as well and the minnow still kicks for a long time. Best of all it doesn’t flop around on the hook, which I think can lead to a lost minnow quickly.

Glenn knows a couple guys who would love to show you a good way to rig them, but they are still on their mandatory break.

False. The correct answer was to say I am sure you mom enjoyed her breaks when she toiled at the factory and your dad enjoyed them at the postal service.

Don’t you know the best arguments include a dash of guilt?
