Need advice on a decent trolling rod/reel combo. Would like for it to have a line counter on it. Looking at getting a set of two. Just don’t want to break the bank but I also don’t want to be unhappy with the product. Looking at spending $100 or less per combo. Am I far off on price? Can a guy find a decent setup for that price? Thanks in advance guys.

What kind of trolling do you want to do ?

Long line/3 way or lead core ?

I was in your shoes a while back and tried the low dollar route to begin with but soon after went to the Tidemaster TIS76MM rods and now using the Diawa Sealine SG17LCA reels and very glad I choose to spend just a bit more.

I know those combos I mention are above your seeking price range but after buying lesser combos and not being happy in the long run you will be glad you did it .

I started with, and still use a set of Cabela’s 8.5 ft Depthmaster planer board rods with their size 27
Depthmaster Gold reels and have caught a ton of Walleyes on them pulling flat lines. I have another set with lead core and they work fine for that too.

I bought a few Jason Mitchell rods and paired them with the size 27 accudepth line counters and love them. Just over 100 bucks a piece. Rods are very nice in my opinion

Look at the weight of some of those rods. Lighter ones like the tide master as nice if you are going to troll with the rod in your hands. They have good feel also to make sure those lures are not dragging that little strand of weed or junk. If the rods are just going to be used for putting in a rod holder and driving around many different ones will work.

Cabelas has Depth Master Trolling Combos on sale for $50. Great set up if you want to get started. Can get rods from 9′ to inside 5′ rods. That price includes rod and reel with line counter. Not top of the line reels but they will get the job done just fine for you and at that price you will still get your money out of them when you want to upgrade to Tekotas!
