How many miles…?

At the close of filming yesterday once the hail stopped and we got the boat on the trailer someone asked “how many miles do you think we put on the Duramax in the last 26 weeks?”

I’m curious by nature and since I keep very detailed mileage records to keep the tax man happy I just figured it out. Just for giggles I thought I’d put together a poll to see how close the members here could get…. without going over.

I’ll post the actual number in a couple hours.

Just miles out to shoot destination and back. There’s not one personal use mile included in the total as the Duramax doesn’t move unless we’re going filming.

PS – I haven’t had a Dew in quite a long time. My new drink of choice, which I consume in large quantity in lieu of the Dew, is unsweetened ice tea. That aspertame stuff is not good for ya’.

Nope, not one catfish mile is included. Much to BK’s dissatisfaction.

Just thinking about all the non-diet mountain dew it took me to get home from Canada if I spent as much time on the road as you did I’d weight 350 lbs… I’m guessing 25,000+

Well, you did say that you don’t want anything in there which would make the taxman skeptical

The actual for the last 26 weeks is 26,691. I’ve not totaled up fuel receipts yet. I think I’ll hold off doing that for now as I don’t want to ruin my mood.

The Duramax just had a birthday of sorts as the odometer just hit 250,000 last week. Of course we’re at 251,000 now. The good news there is my trusty Chevy doesn’t look a mile over 125,000!

400K here we come?! If I could get two more seasons out of it I’d be one happy truck owner.

I was going to guess 14,648 miles and you never picked up a fly rod once. Not even for catfish

What was the longest trip? Must have been quite the haul to balance out the more local trips to maintain a 1000 mile + trip average!

And thanks for the show! Love watching every week online cause for some reason, none of the tv channels want to show ice fishing or walleye fishing here in the “south”!

I’m going to bet the Jumbo crappie trip to Kansas would have been the longest.

Those are a lot of miles to go to ignore bass.

I can see why you’d think that but actually that crappie trip likely wouldn’t have even been top 10. The Kansas trip was 9 hours each way. Last week we went to the Rainy to find the sturgeon fishing to be horrible slow then diverted to Green Bay. That drive was 15 hours one way when you go MPLs to Oconto via Baudette, MN.

It was very common for us to check on one bite in one state only to find it to be slow or the conditions poor and get back in the truck and drive all night to get to a new destination in an entirely different state to check on our plan B bite.

We never did get to a plan D bite situation this season but there were plenty of times that our initial destination didn’t work out for us which led to some long drives late at night which turned our miles per episode aired into an almost painful number.

I can stay home and ignore bass.

    Just kidding, of course.

I’m a walleye guy at heart but I love catching all species of fish. Even bass and catfish. Our move to doing a new show each week for 26 weeks starting in November was great in most ways. Limiting in a few others.

The bass seasons were closed over our range until last week when they opened in WI. They’re obviously still closed here in MN. So technically we only ignored them for one week which I assume is a forgivable faux pas that can be attributed to our filming season more than any intended plan on our end to ignore those species.

But never fear, I have a plan for next season that will allow us to include more species once we switch to open water. The pike, muskie and panfish each deserve their turn in the spotlight.

Doesn’t smallmouth fishing with Paul Delaney off the tip of Door county count?

Thank you, Mr. Ballweg. Since it was our lead off show for this season I think it should count double.

Of course I am aware of the lack of diversity over the last 6 weeks or so. Our hands were tied by the weather and fishing seasons but we will compensate for this going forward.

All those miles… and effort, I join the many in saying it is all appreciated. Love the show, and the fishing friends I have that hadn’t noticed it before are all IDO – DVR guys now.

I followed your lead going to the Peshtigo area late last week, always having wanted to get up there. While our success was nothing in comparison, you and the show helped me get to a new water for new experience. Exactly what I wanted.

While we were targeting, and catching some good walleye, we got two big brown trout out of under five feet of water…. and this Sturgeon, the longest fish to ever come over the side of my boat for a photo. 62″… definitely tested my double uni knot!

Great season, always look forward to watching the show Sunday mornings with Wyatt, though I think he like the music in the commercials to dance to more than the show itself right now. Though he did point at the tv a couple times and say ‘boooo’ (boat in his baby speak).

Let me know if you are going to film any shows via a houseboat trip and need any motivational expertise to get the guys out of the houseboat . . .

I’m glad the trip turned out for you and I’m a bit jealous over those browns you caught. I was picking Paul’s brain about how to approach catching them and he said it was real hit and miss now that stocking numbers had been cut back from previous levels. Apparently you “hit” where most miss. Congrats… and thanks for sharing the show with your fishing buddies. Word of mouth is definitely the way to grow the exposure of our shows.

THAT, to me, is the coolest part of the show. Lots of times it just takes a little bit of information to have the confidence to saddle up and hit the road. I know for a fact I’m more adventurous in my fishing destinations and species due to In Depth Outdoors. We can sleep when we’re dead, and eventually the same old places become, well….just old. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy seasonal bites year after year like the next person, but experiencing fishing adventures from all over the place is what it’s all about for myself!
