It’s been nearly 2 years since I had to put down my hunting partner and my son says it’s time to get a puppy. We are not necessarily requiring a pup with all the papers but we do want to get a good healthy pup from a reputable source. I would also prefer to buy from someone who knows the dame and/or sire.

Anyone here have recommendations on a breeder or know one with a current litter available? I had thought about some smaller breeds but my son is insisting on a lab for duck hunting. I would love a smaller lab and my last lab/golden mix actually hunted with a semi point without ever being trained for that.

If we are going to do this I want to do it soon as the kids will be out of school soon and can work on the training while they are home – never again will I get a pup in the fall….

    Thanks,
    Dave

Dave I have a post on the hunting side under dogs about pups for sale. I’m very impressed with this kids dogs. I don’t know how many they have left.

I have a buddy that has a litter on the ground and another that will have a few litters coming. They will probably be expensive and field trial/hunt test bred so they might be a little much for an inexperienced dog own but if you have trained a few dogs then they would be great.

Have you considered and English Lab? I dont know anything about them, but met a few. They look like labs, but run smaller. I have not idea if they are hunters, but Si hunts ducks w/ a poodle on Duck Dynasty, cant be worse than that.

Jumping on DaveB’s English lab (or some call them British labs…) idea…I do own one and could not be happier. I bought mine 5 years ago from Legend Gun Dogs in Dassel, Mn. If you have any questions on Brit’s shoot me a private message…Good luck! RR

There is a huge diffeance between english and british. English tend to run on the larger size and typically are used for more of a show dog.
That being said I have three british labs from Royalty british kennels. Give them a try you wont be disapointed. You get more than just a puppy from them.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I was able to make contact with a few of the breeders from your posts and speak with some very nice folks about dogs and puppies. I have few leads to follow up with but looks like you all put us on a good path.

    Thanks again
