There is a green can completely underwater at the top of the can line by the sand flats. There is no sign of it above the surface but I assure you it is there as we found out today doing 40mph. Be careful out there, you do not want your prop, skeg and lower unit looking like ours did. lots of smaller debris in the water as well.

not the Skeeter’s?NitrodogPosts: 848May 4, 2014 at 7:17 pm #1408372I spent the last week out there and there are several cans under on Pool 3&4. We watched some go under and pop back up and go back under thru out the week.

I’ve always thought when a boat or motor hits something in the water the passengers are ejected from the boat or at least tossed forward hard at times hard enough to break bones.
Not so!
In this case PFD’s do not help.Listen to Rex Chamber from IL…
Let me squash a rumor and first say that today’s partner, Danny Pettus, and I are still very much alive. We were beyond fortunate today when we hit a log on Wheeler and my Mercury came in the boat with us. The skeg took a huge gash our of Danny’s noggin’, then the prop got his leg, then my leg in the pic. Looked horribly broken at first, but no broken bones. I got a prop to the leg, shoulder and stomach. Was running in the 50’s and it was immediate. Neither one of us saw it until it was too lake. A low floater behind a small wave. Blessed beyond belief, and we both have some healing to do. My phone’s been blowing up, sorry if I hadn’t replied yet, still a big loopy from all the pain meds. A huge thanks to Marine Police, Nick Reeves, Shawn and Kim Striker for helping me out so much today. I’ll post some boat pics if I can up and about tomorrow. Again, thanks for all prayers and well wishes to everyone!!!
As mentioned a number of times in the Mississippi River form there’s many markers on Pool 3 and 4 that are partially or completely under water.
Be safe peoples!
May 4, 2014 at 8:15 pm #1408382I hit the exact same one on Friday morning. Real nice ding in my lower unit. Damn lucky it didn’t take out everything. Seems like the DNR should have had flags on them? Same as you I was going at least 40 mph and came up on a huge swirl in the water but by the time I saw it I was already on it. Sucks but glad everyone was ok.

Travel at your own risk. They are not under the DNR, they are under the Army Corp of Engineers (Or USCG, I can’t recall). Any marking them is a bit pointless as they are the channel marker. They just sink, shift, etc this time of year. It’s just a matter or travel with care. That and running the river isn’t a matter of if you’ll hit something but when you’ll hit something.
May 4, 2014 at 9:47 pm #1408400We’ll get there yet.
It’s the Coast Guard that’s responsible for the Aids to Navigation.
To report an out of place marker or other navigational hazards call 314-269-2610.
It helps to have the closest mile marker #.
They are open 24/7.
May 5, 2014 at 5:59 am #1408422Thanks for the number BK. I just reported the green can that has been on shore in front of the Lake City Dairy Queen for more than a year… it’s upright now with the high water.

When they come through they only fix the ones they can see out of place. If one is missing and can’t find it, they replace it.
May 5, 2014 at 7:16 am #1408447There are a few under on pool 2 also. Some stayed just under the surface. Others bobbed up and down a few feet.
Always important for the driver to be vigilant with keeping their head up and eyes on the water in front of the boat while driving on the river. Not a good time to be staring at electronics or sit seeing the shore line while at higher speeds. Nice if you can get a passenger or two to keep a eye out to.
May 5, 2014 at 8:05 am #1408475Maybe we should take a show of hands on who has not hit a river cone.
I’ve only hit two. Well one hit me but guess it still counts.

I have not hit one, yet. Came REALLY REALLY close once.May 5, 2014 at 8:43 am #1408482I’ve never hit one, but that’s about the only thing on the river that I haven’t hit…yet.
May 5, 2014 at 8:52 am #1408483Is it bad luck to say I haven’t hit a marker?
(at any speed) I’ve hit on log that bent my stainless, on dead head that I though took out the boat and motor but did nothing.
Now putting along in wooded areas I can’t count how many times the motor stopped from hitting wood but never any damage.
