IDO Folks…..I’m looking for some feedback. I’ve located a reasonably price 2004 F150 Crew Cab with about 140K miles with the 5.4L engine. Wondering if there are any trouble spots a guy should look for on this model year. I’m aware of the spark plug issue and also the exhaust manifold problems for this model year, but want to know if any other problems that others are aware of.

I have one with 86,000 on it and the only issue I’ve had is with the emergency brake. Great truck!

Nug, can you elaborate a little bit. What sort of problems have you had?

I bought my 2004 with 22k miles and now was 143K here is some stuff on mine that has happened. Truck is primarily used for pulling and not a daily driver.

    Cam Phasers at 80K

    Fuel pump at 85K

    Rearend at 100K

Spark plugs at 100k (4 broke off in head)

    2 cracked coils at 110k

Torn bladder in 4×4 accuator at 110K

Transmission rebuild at 142k (3 weeks ago)

I have never been stranded with the truck but have sunk a lot of money into it. If it idles and sounds like a diesel truck then it needs cam phasers done.

I bought mine new and it’s used as a light duty construction/recreational and it’s been a great truck. No major problems whatsoever. Best Ford truck out of my last 4 that I have owned.

    Same truck
    240,000
    rear bearing seals
new front wheel bearings last year
busted 6 plugs off then lost the engine, thanks North Country Ford…
    a fuel pressure relay
a few spark plug coil packs
There is a airbag wire harness recall.

Aside from the engine issue it has been a great truck, still have same tranny. I would buy it again but only if the plugs were changed and the engine had more than a month or drive time after.

    What’s a cam phaser?

    100,000 on my 2005.
    It is a noisy idler.

The rear differential clunks once in a while when you turn sharp. The mechanic I use has found metal filings in the differential oil. He says drive it until it goes, it may last for years.

Other than that a power steering pump and that’s about it.

I’m not sure if I’d buy another one. Mostly because I’d look for a good deal and I’m not brand loyal.

mine needs the cam phazers done, I think I’ve heard $1,500 to $1,800. It is like a diesel as far as noise, but it’s been that way for years. Was told that once I see a drop in gas mileage and power to get her in. No other problems except new rear seals and the front actuators went out and were still under the dealer warranty. I’d look elsewhere just because of the engine, unless it’s shown that the work was already done.

It is a solid truck, typically any vehicle with 140k will have had anything that was going to fail already fail other than wear components. The spark plugs rarely break if done correctly, lots of you tube videos on this. The cam phasers will generally last forever if the oil changes were kept up on, if they weren’t it will be really noisy at 140k or they were already replaced. The rear is strong but the limited slip clutches suck but are easy to change. Good trans, change the $X$ actuator switch by the battery if it hasn’t been yet, it’s like $20 and is mounted by the battery. It’s like any 4X4, make sure the 4X4 works and trans is good and it will be fine.

I have one and just replaced the number 5 ignition coil. I’m not very mechanical but did the job myself. My truck has 148,000 on it and all I’ve done is new brakes and two ignition coils. No problems with the 4wd at all.
