So it’s against their policy to make investments without funding, and yet he already placed an order? If they swim at the same speed as walleye, then keeping the current at a rate the carp can’t swim through would also keep walleye from moving past the lock? He was right on one account, it isn’t research… It is a hurried guess that requires $60k to potentially do “who knows what?” On the other side of the coin, it would be funny to see how the carp react to the music… If it makes them constantly jump, I would hang out with a 30-06 and pluck em off one by one! I’d donate $10 for that, where do I sign up?

I guess I read it differently. The research they did was swimming speed of the carp as well as acoustic tests. They know what water velocities and sound will deter them. The acoustics that deter the carp don’t deter any other fish except Catfish (Sorry BK). It looks to me like if the dams were kept at a certain velocity then the only route for migration is thru the locks and they can stop that with the $60,000 acoustics. A much better idea, in my opinion, than lessening or even full out closure of some locks.

I liked the headline in yesterday St Paul Pioneer Press

Invasive carp: U prof has plan, needs money – NOW

I’m thinkin’ “gee, don’t we all?”

Walleye wouldn’t be deterred by the sound, so they could migrate through the locks.

“It turns out their swimming capabilities are very normal,” Sorensen said. “Similar to a walleye, but much slower than a salmon. That meant that if the Army Corps, which operates the lock-and-dam system, could keep water flowing fast enough through the dam’s gates, carp could not swim through.”

The sound could keep them from staying in the lock… But, their plan to use the damn to keep the current flowing fast enough so the carp can’t swim through WILL also likely keep the walleye from swimming through if their swim strengths are about equal, regardless of whether or not the sound has any effect. Also if the sound deters catfish as well, I see many problems with this scenario. If you prevent nature from running her course naturally, worse things tend to happen than what you are trying to prevent. Take Mille Lacs for one example, or the introduction of the carp in the first place…..

So you’re saying what’s worse? Keeping the walleyes and cats from migrating or keeping out Asian Carp? I guess I can say I would rather not have the carp

I agree. How many more days of higher flow would the lock be able to do above what they would have already? Maybe a dozen? They are there to sustain the pools they just can’t let her flow at will all year long, and that’s where the bubbles come in. Eyes and cats will migrate just fine the other days. I still like his approach, but would like some other scientists or biologists or other “smart” people to backup his theories on the carps hearing. Would hate to have him be wrong and he just blasted the ear drums out of a million other fish.

I see where this is going. $60K for the first one. Then say they are past it so plop another $60k for the next lock. Pretty soon we got $60K X 100 = $6M. Well played professor, well played.

To be fair there would only be about 8 right, where was it going dam #8? South is already dodging the flying carp so won’t need them there.

My 2 cents is $ 60,000 is not a lot of money compared to what the government is throwing at it. If it is true the carp are jumping to escape the engine noise maybe he is on to something. I say let him try and and let me know where to send my donation.

My question would be is where are they going to get all the water to keep the flow up? Drought conditions the last two years ?????

First we would need to know how much flow is needed to keep them at bay.

If it’s 6000 cfs, we wouldn’t ever have to worry about them up here.
