Yup. As soon as they can help with fishing…, that’s what a warden told me when me and my 14mo old son came in with our 12 eyes…. Start em young.

that might be stretching it a bit. The co that I talked to said, when the kid can cast and reel in by themselves. Each co will interpret how much “help” was needed, and if that kid was able to “fish” on there one. So it all depends on the ability of the kid in the boat that is fishing. I don’t think a kid in a car seat would be allowed a limit as long as you “helped” them fish.

They shouldn’t have to be able to cast it but should be able to pull a fish in. Though even then you can help them.

She LOVES fishing with me, had her out since she was very young. Just wasn’t sure if she can keep a few fish herself. She cast and brings in her own fish pb walleye was caught last summer on a shad ( 23″) I think she was happier than I was. Thanks for the reply and help.

CO stopped by while we were shore fishing a few years back. There was a 5 to 7 year old fishing. The CO asked him which was his rod and he pointed to it….otherwise we would have had too many rods.

Are we really talking about strategies for ensuring we can take multiple limits of fish? The first thing i taught both my children is to only take what we can use. The messaging here sounds outdated and selfish. I imagine the guy from cove bay taking his 14 mo old to grab 12 eyes is the loudest complainer about the nets on mille lacs wrecking the fishery. We need to think sometimes before we say or write things.

I don’t think that was the intent of the post. It pays to be prepared. One fish over a single limit would require a second fisherman present.

don’t have any kids, and at 52 I don’t plan on having any. the OP asked a question about keeping a limit for a kid and how old they have to be. I have fished with the onamia warden a few times in the past and that very topic was talked about while fishing. I just passed on the information that he was looking for. you are right in the assumption that I am not happy about having the nets in the lake every spring, but I am not the LOUDEST voice you hear. and yes, WE, that includes YOU, need to think before YOU say and write things. the kid in a car seat was a analogy used to show the difference between a kid who would be able to keep a limit and one who would not.

And Milly has a 4 fish limit so he would need 2 kids in car seats to get 12.

I may as well help the thread as well. With a ten year old you are good to go. Just remember that laws can be interpreted different ways by different people. It’s always best to consult your local CO if you have a question.

In Minnesota my kids kept fish count toward my limit (under the age of 16, over 16 they have their own license). I don’t get the family license. And the last time I looked Mille Lacs has a 2-walleye limit not a four fish limit as an above poster has stated.

I believe it’s a 2 fish limit per person on Milly.

I believe you are wrong. An angler under 16 can possess his/her own limit. There is no “family license” in MN; it is a husband/wife combo (under 16 needs no licence and 16 and over need his/her own license).

Although, I noticed that you’re from Iowa, so maybe the non-resident rules differ.

That’s one of the issues here, everybody assumes the poster is going to be fishing in Minnesota, and eveybody thinks that everyone lives in the cities. We are in the general discussion. And yes laws are different for resident vs nonresident.
