Ode to the turkey truck

Heard on the news last night that awhile back a turkey truck full of turkeys in cages tipped over and Killed a bunch of them.

Here’s the clincher. Peta has filed for a permit to put a Granite marker along side the road in rememberence of the turkeys that died. I hate to admit it but ya its in this part of Iowa. The news showed an artists rendition of what the Granite marker would look like and it would be about 4′ tall and about 3′ wide.

The inscription would read something like,,,In rememberence of the turkeys that died in this accident, etc, etc. At the bottom of it, it would say Eat Vegan in big letters.

Those people are really out there and I wonder who’s smarter them or the turkeys.

After reading it…I thought the title should be changed to:

    Thursdays Joke of the Day.

If it wasn’t true, it would be funny!

They do realize these turkeys were going to the slaughterhouse, right?

I wonder what the psychology behind it is? I try and be respectful of nature. I love animals. Still, I understand life and death. I understand reality. And I also hate to see any animal suffer needlessly.

    I also love grilled meat.

I should get a t-shirt honoring the turkeys that have gone down my gullet.

Anyone eat turkey burgers? They sure have come a long way since they were first introduce. Not bad. Sure, I still prefer beef burgers, but I won’t turn my nose up at turkey.

I’ve had a few as well. They are a good change of flavor once in a while! I do slap son thick cut bacon on them though.

Yep, I put some bacon on there too. We’ve also gone bunless, which is fine for dinner.

I do season up the turkey burgers really well, more so than a beef burger. I also like the fatter 85% “lean” turkey burgers.

After all this turkey talk, I’m going to immortalze a big old tom tomorrow morning. Should I put up a make shift head stone where he flops over in the woods?

IA DOT turned down their request to put up the memorial. Hard to believe that I need to praise the Iowa DOT now.

Maybe we could all gather on the spot of the tragedy every year for a memorial BBQ?

    You know it makes sense.

That would have been so fabulous had they actually installed that monument!

To all you “turkey burger haters”:

    Pesto-Mozzarella Turkey Burger

    1 1/4 lb. lean ground turkey (Jennie-O 93%)
    1 TBSP. steak sauce
    2 cloves garlic, minced
    3/4 tsp. salt
    1/2 tsp. black pepper
    6 oz. shredded mozzarella
5 TBSP. pesto (store bought or home made)
    8 slices marble rye bread
    Lettuce and tomato slices

Combine the turkey, steak sauce, garlic, salt and pepper. Mix well. Shape into 8 thin patties. Combine the cheese and the pesto. Spoon about 1/4 cup into the center of 4 patties. Top with the remaining 4 patties. Press the edges firmly to seal.
Grill, covered, over med. Heat about 5 min. per side. Serve on bread or buns with lettuce and tomato if desired.

(you may not be able to fit all the cheese/pesto mixture in there)
