What do you guys use for a depth finder on a fly in where you are using camp boats? Anything special I should look for or stay away from?

I just bought a used LMS-522 and had a suction cup transducer that I installed. Now I have to decide if it’s worth the weight diff to buy a lithium 12v. Only allowed 100#.

Whatever you do, have a “Plan B” backup for batteries. Either a way to charge the battery or a spare. Very easy to leave those on and drain the juice.

I’ve wondered about those small roll-up solar panels. Seems like a good way to keep things charged.

How did you get a fly in your locator?

Totally agree on plan B for power.

    Been there…done that!

Most fly in camps are on lakes that have great fishing in all the usual spots, points, neck down areas, streams/rivers entering the lake. Lake trout fishing is done over the main basin. Most likely there will be a lake map on the cabin wall with all the spots already marked. Although a locator/GPS is nice to have along, the weight is just not worth it. Especially if you are on a 5 day trip and the battery lasts only 2 days with no way to charge it.

That’s what I was thinking.. if you need a fish locator, find another lake Most lakes that are fly in, you better have the locator on the bow, you usually find the shallow rocks/bottom with the lower unit…

do the boats have batteries on them?

I did a fly-in where we had electric start motors. so i just brought up an HDS5 mounted on a Genz Blue box, and then used a portable transducer bracket from cabelas.

If we wouldn’t have had access to a battery, i probably would not have brought it.

as much as fishing was “easier” on the lake, it was still nice to have with. One of the biggest assets was being able to mark paths that are safe to run, and then able to run those the rest of the week without worrying about hitting rock at high speeds.
