Every spring I look forward to their arrival with great anticipation! Living as far north as I do, I still have a long wait staring me in the face. You lucky guy’s in Iowa must be finding some by now. I must admit to being lucky as well. When they finally put in an appearance up here by LOW, I get to pick them right in my yard! Good luck to all the shroom hunter’s! DIRTBALL2

this site is usually a pretty good indicator. when they start creeping up south of you, start getting out and looking.

I always look for dandelions blooming, lilacs blooming and asparagus sprouting as signs that morels are popping as well. As cold as this Spring has been, I’d expect it may be Mother’s Day before we see any here in western Wisconsin

Same for SW Wisconsin I don’t know what the name of these little violet color flowers are….BUT…when I see them, I find a lot of shrooms!

Brian, I respect other people’s morel hot spots, so I would never ask where it is.

However I would like to request a 10 pound bag of them. Let me know when you plan on going out for a few hours picking them for me.

Wait, this is rrr’s spot? Make sure you go after a nice cleansing rain.

the oldtimers around here used the saying “when the leaves on an oak are the size of a squirrels ears, you’ll find morels”. They were pretty close on that one.

There’s nothing green in the woods of Vernon County yet. I’m still thinking it will be Mother’s Day before they are out in earnest. They might pop in isolated open areas sooner, but I won’t bother putting a bread sack in my turkey vest this week or next.

getting close here, just need some nice soaking rains and a nice sunny warm day to follow. It’s as dry as a popcorn fart here, so we really need some rain.

My Shitaki logs have quite a few “buds” visible now, but they like temps much cooler than the morels.

My asperagus is now just starting to come up, some buds are like 3 inches high here in N. iowa.
Been awfully cool, I am thinking that it will be a week or two for the morels to start.
By the way, I have discovered that when it is getting late in the season in the spring, that is when the really big uns can be found.
When most have given up looking that can be when the best ones can sometimes be found.

I’m looking at around two weeks too but its supposed to be in the 30’s here at night for about 3 or 4 days. I guy I know went turkey hunting and decided to try to take a nap, he goes the same time every year. He couldn’t get a nap in because the grounds still to cold. The lilacs aren’t even blooming here yet, just very small leaves. When the lilacs are blooming is the time to go here, I cans see 2 too 3 weeks here yet.

I wouldn’t bother ever putting a bread sack in my vest if I’m looking for morels. Unless I want some mushy decomposed shrooms. I have some prime morel spots at my disposal but they are loaded with deer ticks. Lyme disease has me really nervous, so I bought a spray can of permetherin to try out this year.
