we just bought a boat from a individual and went to get it registered and found out the guy we bought it from wasn’t the registered owner on file and the previous owner had a suspended registration due to oweing 26 dollars in taxes from buying it in Wisconsin and bringing it to Minnesota that has higher taxes and because of this the title was never printed. we were told to contact the previous owner to get this issue taken care of before it can be registered we have her contact info weve called several times and my wife messeged her on facebook and have never gotten any replies or call backs. what can we do now

I would try to find out who owned the boat before the person you bought it from, to see if you can clear it up at the source of the problem

Can you just pay the $26 and get it done?
Doubtful because he isnt the RO and the guy who sold it to him wasnt the RO.
Sounds like a shady deal, but I’m sure it will work out in the end… as long as the police don’t come knocking on your door to seize the boat.
I’d try and locate the RO and see what he has to say… See if you can find out how the guy you bought it from ended up with the boat as well.

If not, it’s really hard to get much done. I’ve always done my own bill of sales on anything I sell. If it’s something with a title I have the buyer/seller meet me at the DMV to make sure the title gets switched seamlessly. It’s two fold. If you’re the buyer, you know it’s a good title and done deal. If you are the seller you know they registered it in your name so you can’t be held liable.
Sorry I couldn’t help much. If you have everything in writing and it goes on too long I would find a lawyer.
April 20, 2014 at 2:31 pm #1405200It’s the government Unfortunately their going to jerk him around, and pass him from one agency to another until he eventually get’s so frustrated he just gives up
I like you’re idea, but the government doesn’t think with common sense like you and I do
If the person that originally owned the boat never got it titled, how could he sell it? The second question I have is, How could the person who bought it from the original owner have ever legally owned it?
April 20, 2014 at 3:26 pm #1405202we know who the registered owner is and called and left her messages and my wife also messeged her on facebook. the head dnr guy said we couldn’t pay the 26 dollars without trying to get hold of her first
April 20, 2014 at 3:29 pm #1405203we did get a bill of sale from the guy we bought it from and he got it from the registered owner by trading a motorcycle for it

April 20, 2014 at 5:14 pm #1405211another question I have is how did they first get the registration stickers for the boat if they didn’t pay the Minnesota tax on it. they bought it in Wisconsin where it was titled there. the stickers expired in December and they got the Minnesota tags in june of 2011. we have the registered owners bill of sale as well as the original owner before hers Wisconsin boat registration card

They probably did not realize they were still the registered owner (although they SHOULD have been aware) and thus are still liable and are happy to resolve the issue
