In my back yard. Poor Bas&#*d. Too bad he wont get the bluebird house. House sparrows have taken over the neighborhood. I used to have them nesting in my yard for years.

    Hey Suzuki,

My wife loves Blue Birds and we have many nests and fledge out about 40-60 chixs each year. If you keep emptying out the nest from the sparrows until you see a BB take up residence then they might re-establish. If you want more info let me know.

We have blue birds in the St Croix Valley all winter.

    Crazy little things.

I’ve tried everything. Even if the Bluebirds get established the sparrows either run them out or kill their eggs or chicks. Its sickening. I pull out sparrow nests/eggs as fast as they appear. At my last house I could shoot them. Cant here.

two things that we have done that has helped is have the nests in as much of an open area as possible. When too close to trees or brush its hard to keep the other birds out. Second we always put up two houses in each nest location with the two being at least 30′ apart. We usually will get a swallow in one and a BB in the other. Swallows are good and you know you have one if you see a feather usually white in the nest before the eggs so don’t empty this one if you see the feather. If you see sticks and twigs it means that a starling or other bird is setting up shop and the nest needs to be emptied .

    No sightings as yet.

I heard that if you cut a 2-3inch circular hole in the roof and cover it with plexi the sparrows will not nest in the bluebird house. My brothers old boss did it to his and hasn’t had a problem.

I saw my first bluebird the second week in March. Tell me he wasn’t a bit chilly!!

What RKD- Jim said might work sparrows like it dark in their nest and a bluebird will tolerate some light.

I don’t mind wrens. They set up shop in our BB house last year but shortly after the eggs hatched the sparrows killed them.

My old neighbor had a sparrow trap but it was a live trap and you have to kill them by hand. I sure miss the days I could snipe them with the pellet gun out of the sliding door in the kitchen. That was fun.
