I am finalizing my plans on taking my boat from Grand Rapids to Brainerd 4/25-27. My plan is to get out at lum park in brainerd. Looking at the map it looks to be a back water. Anyone know if it is open or if it would be by then? I can use a different ramp upriver but I am trying to run the longest stretch we have in mn without portaging or using locks at 177 miles.

I was watching the river opening up today while I was working at my neighbors which is about 4 miles up river from lum park. That access is in a backwater but I’m pretty sure it will be open by then, if not I know neimizers resort will be open by then which is about five miles up. What kind of boat are you using?

I’m using my 16′ alweld with a obj.

I heard it was opening up around Palisade and Jacobson this past week. My biggest concern was down by Brainerd. I’m looking forward to finally following through with it this year. This is the third time I have planned it but I gave up on the other boat that bailed the past two years.

I’m sure you’ll be fine with the ice but if you want an update PM me and I can give you an update later. I will be fishing the river as soon as I can so I’ll be watching it closely. That sounds like a fun trip, me personally I would wait till fall for some of the best small mouth fishing in the state or perhaps the country.

I was at Rugged River Resort (Niemeyer’s) today and the main channel was wide open.

I would like to do it late in the year but I would need weeks to cover that much water fishing. I heard it freezes solid every year and is void of anything other then suckers and carp.

Is there any chance I need to worry about the ramp at lum park flooding?
