Not sure how many of you saw the recent news coverage regarding Horse Herpes… Unfortunately, we had to put down my daugther’s horse this morning because of it. Vets are on high alert due to how quick it spreads and the fatality rate. We had our horse at a barn in Isanti… and it never moved from there since we purchased it at the beginning of March. With incubation period of 10 days… it had to have been brought in by a person. Likely one of the workers since the horse stayed in a stall.

So.. daughter and wife are crying.. I am travelling (dumb luck)… and get to spend a ton on vet bills with nothing to show for it.

If you spend any time around horses, make sure you disinfect… hands, clothes, shoes/boots, etc.

    What were the symptoms?

Uncle’s family in MT lost 3 horses last year in a matter of 6 months. Horses ranged from 25 to 4 years of age. All exhibited the same symptoms closely related to colic, which it wasn’t. The last horse was sent to the University for testing, but nothing ever came of it. They tested everything from feed to bedding.

Wonder if this is a possibility.

It affects the neurological system. He lost control of his bladder, back-end and then front-end weekness. hard time walking, dragging feet, unsteadiness, etc. Most cases have runny noses too but ours didnt.

Anoka Equine is who we use.. they have been on top of the spread and provide updates.

This is a bad deal. My family has curtailed all equine activities including shows sales auction etc. Even association with other horse people.

Ugh, not good. Wonder how this will effect the races at Canterbury and Running Aces this year.
