My wife and I are putting together a long weekend to meet family in Door County. Never been there. Looking for advice on places to stay and what you enjoyed the most there.
My brother and I could sneak away on a charter or bring rods if there is shore opportunity if we really wanted to but this is definitely not a fishing trip. I want to start planning now so any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

ps-like we’re not bringing fishing gear.

Washington Island is nice and if you like hiking you can take a ferry to Rock island.

A day at the beach is always nice. Whitefish Dunes State Park has some amazing beaches but the conditions can vary based upon wind direction. Some days the water will be OK, others really freakin’ cold. Some days the beach will be covered in dead alewives, but most days are OK. http://dnr.wi.gov/topic/parks/name/whitefish/

The Von Stiehl Winery is always a good time.

I go mostly for Smallie fishing in the Spring. Rowleys Bay the adventurous can use waders and float tubes to gain access to the Mink River (where it flows in). We take a small tin boat and walk it over the shoals to get in. The best part of Door County is the eating, walking around the small towns and shops. I stay here lodging

Shopping, sight-seeing and food will be our biggest activity however my brother and I would fish some every day given a non-boat option which I am sure we will locate!

ps-bro just indicated a desire for salmon charter. I will ask for recommendations once we get closer but will take suggestion now if a good one associated with IDO is known.

Right now securing accomodations is priority so any suggestions to neat places would be welcomed. Thanks again.

Check out the Bridgeport in Sturgeon Bay. Stayed there a couple times and it’s a pretty nice place. If you don’t need anything special for accomodations, The Chal-A motel on the north side of Sturgeon bay is decent and reasonably priced. Never stayed anywhere north of there, but I think the lodging might get more expensive the further north you go as it becomes more “touristy” with all the little shops and such. If you’re in the mood for pizza, try Sonny’s just south of the bridge in town. Otherwise, Door County is famous for their fish boils. Most of the Salmon fishing is done on the lake side of Door County and Algoma is one of the more popular ports/areas for that.

We stayed in Fish Creek @ Homestead Suites Very nice location / lodging kind of in the middle of things.

The White Gull in for their Cherry french toast is almost a must along with pizza from the Wild Tomato.

My wife and I go up there one or two times a year. We’ve stayed at a couple places (Americinn, Stone Harbor and Wave Point. Wave Point would be my favorite so far. Just to make you aware, the prices go up everywhere after the 3rd weekend in May.

As far as fishing goes, I’ve had 2 bad experiences with guides there and 1 great experience. I would highly recommend JJ’s Guide service.

If JJ would return my emails maybe he could get my business. But at this point neither recommended fishing guide is available. Still looking for suggestions. Thanks.

DC is what you make of it. Definitely something for everyone. My wife loves all the little shops and I hate crowds…..There fore I fish. I run up there 4 to 5 times a year. I only stay at either the state parks or auqaland. Basic but it fills my needs. Good wineries if you like wine. Get off the beaten path and ask locals for what you want. You get great advise. My wife and I get ice cream at Wilson’s and watch the sunset on the bay. Beautiful area when viewing from the water. Remember, there is only two main roads…. have patience.
