So what have you guys found for a quality grease gun. Been using one of those smaller ones with the three tubes of grease. The thing is always a mess trying to change grease tubes. Tubes dont last long either.

Mike, I gave up on those tubes years ago.
Most quality guns allow you to flip the seal around on the piston. (flipped towards the bottom = Tubes / Seal facing the head = NO TUBE.) Remove the cylinder (with the piston inside) from the head. Stick it in a tub or bucket of bulk grease. Draw the piston back sucking grease intio the tube. Lock piston and screw head on. Clean excess grease from tube and get back to work.

Yes, the little ones are almost completely useless as they are always out of grease when you need them. To add insult to injury, the grease cartridges cost about twice as much per ounce.

I got a Craftsman one on sale some years ago, the full size, and I never looked back. I probably only use 2-3 tubes of grease per year, but it’s worth it to not be constantly messing around with an empty grease gun.
Whatever you get, carefully read the instructions on how to load the thing. Some have little tricks where you need to do something to make sure they don’t air-lock or have other issues after loading.

If I were to buy another one right now, I’d get the Milwaukee Li-Ion battery powered grease gun.

But, the old style cartridge or bulk guns still work too.

What would you use if you had to grease 30 zerks on a daily basis?

Bulk grease – type of gun?

A buddy asked me this – just this last weekend.

Personally, for that many zerks, I’d buy one of the battery powered grease guns like the Milwaukee mentioned above. I think most of the main cordless tool makers have a grease gun available as a bare tool. You could couple this with some other time-saving tools like a battery powered impact driver.

Assuming, of course, that this is taking place somewhere where there is power to keep the batteries charged.

Otherwise, I’d just buy a couple of good hand grease guns and set one up with the flex hose and one up with the rigid nozzle. The rigid nozzle is faster to engage/disengage, but obviously it’s limited as to getting it into tight areas.

As far as grease, I’d just get a case price on cartridges. IMO, you’d have to use a LOT of grease to justify a drum.

Lincoln grease guns last forever. Be careful with the powered grease guns, you can not feel when they start to build pressure and can blow the seals very quickly!

I use Lincoln’s for years on my skid steers etc. last forever. They also make a battery one I also have a pneumatic one. Rarely use it.
