New name for Asian carp

The troublesome fish currently known as “Asian carp” may be about to get an image makeover in Minnesota.

Bills moving through the Legislature would require official state materials to refer to the fish as “invasive carp” instead. That’s in line with the threat the non-native fish poses to Mississippi River-area ecosystems.

Some Minnesota residents of Asian descent object to calling the fish “Asian carp.” They say it casts people from Asian cultures in a negative light.

A similar bill was introduced in the Iowa Legislature last year but didn’t make it out of committee.

Is a decendant from Asia not Asian? I decend from WI there for a Cheesehead. pretty simple stuff. Even a farmer from WI can figure it out.

Apparently, in Asia, they have a different name for these carp. They all them “damn tasty”.

I read an article that said that commercial fishing of these species is taking off down in OH and IL. They process them into pre-cooked fish patties and flash freeze and then off to Asia they go by the container load. The article said the constraint now is not enough commercial fishing outfits are up and running to supply the fish to keep the processing plants running at efficient levels.

There’s probably a Deadliest Catch style reality show coming soon. Wicked Carp or whatever. The vast Illinois river…

MPR had a lil segment on that as well. Our American Asian carp are much tastier and healthier than their full blooded Asian counterparts. Much less containments in our fishies as over there. Imagine that, regulations do have some effect.

Since we are on the subject I’ve always been a little uncomfortable with the term “cracker”. Think we could go after Nabisco and the saltine companies as well?
