Maybe they need to spend that extra cash on a gym membership, not a rod!

    Just kidding.

I am surprised so many people have such opinions on how other people should spend their money. Although on the other hand, posting a picture of a $700 bill on two rods, I don’t know what you expect. I think some people take it as rubbing their faces in it. A simple post without a picture would have sufficed.

All that being said, enjoy your top of the line gear! I hope they help put some PBs in the boat.

For me, I spend my money on the rod and get an decent reel. The higher end rods have a niver feel to them – lighter as Joel mentioned when fishing all day and have a lot more sensitivity. Plus these rods normally have a lifetime warranty. Reels on the other hand, I know I will need to replace every 5 to 7 years as they can just wear out. Reels dont have a lifetime warranty

Correct me if I am wrong, but this is the same with St. Croixs, yes? And it doesn’t matter if you are at fault, within reason?

For me if the warranty is idiot proof for me, then why not get the top end rod? Why not use the best if it will last a lifetime?

I’ve seen people lose $300 on pull tabs in less than an hour. I’m sure there are people that spend that much on booze in a month. For some reason big money rods cause a stir. I’ve seen it on here before. It must be some sort of mental thing that a fishing pole just can’t command that sort of price tag.

Compared to what wives cost a guy nobody should even blink at what a rod costs.

That’s the problem for me. Big ticket items usually cost me twice the retail price.

My decision to upgrade to high end rods was based on a couple things. 1.) most importantly could I afford to spend some extra money – i felt I could (big suprise) 2.)secondly was lifetime warranty from a company I trust in the USA. Now that said I made a deal with myself/family that I would only buy 1 rod every 1-3 years to replace the rods I already had that I felt needed an upgrade.

I think things really need to be kept in perspective as to how much you really use them vs how much you want to use them.

I just bought my 3rd Legend Extreme (since 08) and bought my wife a legend tournament (mother’s day gift). i feel they will last damn near a lifetime.

all that said i know in some aspects (pitching blades) it is without a doubt caught me more fish. on the other hand I still use my Cabelas Prodigy jig rod ($65 in the bargain cave) to vertical jig and I just love how it feels to me.

    my $0.02 anyway.

I would say yes you did, I will also add for the opinion pool…fished with lower quality rods most of the time until recently, last 5 years tried higher end rods, I know the increased sensitivity, weight, craftsmanship, warranty, ect…years used divided by money spent per rod, I would say the initial upfront cost might scare you, but the end result will pay off

Hey Pug.. The higher end st. croix rods (avid+) do have lifetime warranty.. but its not fool proof unless you pay them $75. They have two service plans. One, you ship your broken rod to them with a $75 check and they send you a new rod no questions asked. Two, you ship your rod plus a check for $20 and they will inspect your rod and if it was not your fault then they will replace it if it was the rod and not you.

Their turnaround time is fantastic, but the added costs leave a little bit to be desired. I’ve had to use st. croix, quantum, and daiwa warranty.
Daiwa was by far the easiest. Sent in the $75 rod and they called me and told me they don’t have any more of those rods and would it be acceptable to upgrade me to the next level rod that has the same action/power. I said yes and in the mail came a team daiwa fuego ($250 mrsp). (Cost me $15 total for an upgrade to a $250 rod)
Quantum didn’t have me send in the rod, just show them a picture of the broken rod and then sent me a new one.. no upgrade (cost me nothing for a new rod)
St. Croix called me the next day and told me they got the rod and they were going to replace it, then offered to upgrade me for added $$$. But they did let me switch from an eyecon (what broke) to a premier at no charge. (cost me $30 for a replacement)

I’m breaking that many rods because I’m out fishing every day and not sitting on a computer chatting about fishing on my lunch break.

KEVIN – You might need to be a little more creative in your explanation with St. Croix and you’ll only pay the shipping costs.

    What do you mean?

I’ll gladly pay the $20 to get a new rod, its going to a good company that is employing great people in the midwest. Its just something that has to be mentioned when talking about their warranty. I would love to see them drop the fee to get a replacement when the rod is not the fault of the customer (mine broke while setting the hook lindy rigging). But until then, $30 for a new $120 rod isn’t anything to worry about… but it cannot be ignored when comparing warranty services.

I am saying there are ways around the $75 charge if it is “your” fault on the break. I am saying make sure you get the Silver Plan (replaced for free) vs the Gold Plan (pay $75 to replace). i am tickled to only pay the $20 shipping for a new high end rod.

I almost got burned by St. Croix, kinda made me for a bit. I had a LES76MF that had the graphite split with a partial splinter immediately below the third guide wrap. It was still useable, and kinda hard to notice; I wasn’t 100% sure when or what exactly happened. I thought it might have been due to the guide being wrapped too tight, so I sent it in using the lesser cost silver plan. Anyhow, they deemed it my fault. I said fine, and I’d pay the full warranty replacement charge. For some reason they felt that it was an either/or type deal.

The guy explained to me that since I used the silver plan, I couldn’t get a new rod.. I tried in vane to explain how completely illogical that was. I wound up hanging up and was forced to call back and explain that I promised to always just pay if I ever broke another..

I see they now have this on the warranty page:

    3. However, if evidence indicates that the damage is due to an accident, normal wear or neglect, then we’ll advise you of the additional cost to repair or replace your rod.

I’ve been over the barrel regarding expensive fishing poles since I turned 17. I got a glx sjr721 for graduation. I consider it the SUV of fishing poles; pretty much compare every spinning rod I use to it at some level.

High end gear is also about the pleasure of using it. I could probably shoot just as many pheasants and grouse with a beat up 870, but I sure prefer using a fine side by side or over and under. Nothing wrong with a little pride of ownership.
