Laminectomy anyone?

I’ve been suffering with severe back pain for quite a while now. I’ve been through all the other methods of reducing pain and it has come down to a Dr. drilling out my L4 and L5 to make room for my nerves so they’re not getting crushed. Has anyone been through this procedure? I cringe at the thought of back surgery.

Ah, not me , not yet anyway.
I used to ‘scrub’ some of those operations and that is a highly effective operation for a great majority of patients that suffer from chronic back pain from nerve entrapment. Some patients needing a ‘disectomy’ as well as the ‘laminectomy’…One thing i do know, is that you’ll have to let things heal real well before you go back to ‘normal’ living activities…..good luck.

Surgery should always be an option of last resort. Especially back surgery as there is no coming back to normal Post-Surgery. There are pain specialists out there that could possibly help. I don’t have a ton of detailed info on that, sorry. But it would be worth a second opinion or some searching around.

Wade; I’ve been through all the options already and you’re right about surgery being a last resort. I view it as sometimes you have to take off the duct tape and get to the source of the problem, unfortunately.

Mike I’ve had 2 of them. Both were successful and got rid of what I thought was the worse pain one could imagine. The 2nd one I knew from the start it was going to be surgery from my 1st experience. A neuologist did the second one and only made about 2-3″ cut. The 1st one in like 1978 was a 10″ cut. The 2-3″ one was way better and I got over it much quicker. It’s not as bad as it sounds, don’t be scared. RH

Had mine back in ’91. Instant relief. Had the surgery the day before Thanksgiving – back to work the Monday after. No problems since then.

Have you met with a pain specialist and/or discussed the possibility of a spinal cord stimulator or drug infusion system? I’m not sure what would come first as far as trying to alleviate the pain, laminectomy or device, but I am sure a pain specialist could provide some insight.

I do know that both can be life changing for some people.
